He was born Dec. 23, 1923 in Floyd County, KY to Newt and Essie (Holbrook) Prater who are both deceased. He first married Erma Jean (Colley) Prater and she is deceased. He then married Eileen (Reese) Prater and she is deceased. Surviving is one daughter, Rita (Jerry) Parker of Bainbridge, GA; two step-daughters, Gale Carder of Lima and Patricia (Robert) Karcher of Lima; one brother, Don Prater of Cleveland, GA; 11 grandchildren: Lisa Reeves, Bainbridge, GA; Elizabeth Stalnaker of Quincy, FL; Laura Beebe of Quincy, FL; Terrie Bradley of Minster; Bonnie Sunday of Delphos; Becky (Tim) Koeper of New Bremen; Susan Bradley of Wapakoneta; Deborah Bright, Lima; Shelly Burchett of LIma; Bobby Karcher of Norfolk, VA and Greg Carder of San Diego, CA; 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Hershel was a retired farmer and supervisor at Lima State Hospital in Lima. He was a member of the Magoffin County Historical Society in Kentucky. He was also a member of the Celebration Baptist Church in Faceville, GA. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home, Alger, with Rev. Russell Manns officiating.
