JOHN HEALY was born in Galway, Ireland, and a son of James and Winifred (O'Brian) Healy, to whom three sons and three daughters were born. The Doctor came to the United States in November, 1853, and landed in Philadelphia where he had two brothers living, who had preceded him about four years. The Doctor had commenced the study of medicine while in Ireland; while employed as salesman by his brother, he continued the study in his leisure moments. In 1855 he migrated to Washington County, Ky., where he finished his studies, returned to Philadelphia, and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in the spring of 1858, after which he located at Chicago, Ky. In 1862 he located where he now resides, in Raywick, where he has successfully practiced his profession ever since. He was a strong Union man during the war, and acted as local surgeon, and has been examining surgeon since the war. The Doctor owns several houses and lots in Raywick. August 6, 1878, he married Julia G., a daughter of Dr. John J. And Felecia (Jesse) Barry. Dr. Barry was the leading physician of New Haven, Ky., and was post surgeon for a time during the war. He was also a writer for scientific and medical journals and is the author of "Medico Christian Embryology," and a "Life of Christopher Columbus;" was one of the most intellectual and best informed men of his county, and was highly respected. He was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1808, and died at New Haven, Ky., in 1880. His wife, a daughter of Rev. Samuel Jesse, of Shelby County, Ky., who was a Baptist minister, was born in the Shenandoah Valley, Va., and married Catherine George, of Maryland. He was one of the first pioneers of Kentucky. Dr. Healy and wife are consistent members of the Catholic Church, and in politics he is Democratic. Mrs. Julia Barry Healy inherits her father's taste for literature. She contributes to various publications in the United States and in Canada. For several years prior to her marriage she edited the Orphans' Garland, the official organ of the diocese of Louisville.
