On the back of this picture, my grandfather wrote: "This picture was made at
Minter School house in the year 1901. E. G. Maddox on Right", front row,
teacher.

Here is a recollection I've found in one of his notebooks, p. 78: "Minter
School 1900. I boarded with Bud Collie $6.00 per month and a horse to ride
and washing. He had a stallion that I often rode to Oak Level to get our
mail. Mrs. Collie gave me the best of lunches - always an excellent piece of
pie on top. I had a room with a big fire place all alone."
