Moore jamoore4@juno.com Date: May 12, 1999 ********************************************************************************** Private Cemetery CR1235 app 1 mile north of SR435, Minerva, Mason, KY Present owner- Stanley Forman Reed Original property owner-Richard Soward and his wife Nancy Campbell whom we think was a Quaker, hence (we believe) the unmarked grave possibilities. The cemetery is oriented app. N/S and measures 48'X48", wire fence and locust posts (recent) enclosed with a gate on the north side. It is approximately 150' north of the homestead (which is in very bad condition and ready to collapse).Richard was a Captain in the War of 1812, entitling him to a land grant, which he chose in Minerva. He built his house in about 1820. His only child, Alfred building his home about 1000 yards south of Richard's homestead. Richard was in the military with then Capt David Chiles, later becoming a general along with Richard in the Ky Militia. Alfred married David's daughter, Elizabeth. So starting on the north side, from the west, the first possible grave is unmarked. Next east is: IN MEMORY of JOHN CHILES who departed this life August 29th 1821 in the 27th year of his age IN parted this life Sep 15th 1815 in the 23d year of his age (broken stone) Next row south: IN MEMORY (unmarked) of LEWIS CHILES who departed this life Dec 8th 1827 in the 28th year of his age IM MEMORY of ELIZABETH SOWARD Consort of Alfred Soward and daughter of David Frances Chiles Who departed htis life April 30th 1827 In the 20th year of her age next row south: In memoriam of (unmarked) Gen David Chiles he departed this life 1831 11 the 67th year of his age He lived a Citizen and Officer an ornament in society and for integrity and morality he stood un rivald And in death the grave had no terror IN memory of FRANCES CHILES Consort of Gen David Chiles who departed this life April 1831 in the 57th year of her age There is room on the East Side for at least 2 more files of unmarked graves, if there are anymore...We have not found a grave for Richard, Nancy, nor Alfred who died 1872, 1862 and 1879 respectively. There is also 2 grave markers at the south end of the property, which look like they have been moved from a plowed field. They read: Prudence Soward consort of Alfred Soward who died May 27,1833 in the 50th year of her age In memory ofCharles W Son of William and Elizabeth Soward Died April 10, 1837 Age 3 mo 18 days
