Fraser was born in Stewart County, Tenn.,in 1834 and is the son of Benjamin F. Fraser, and Mary J. Fraser, daughter of Samuel Elam. His parents were Virginias, who in early life became residents of Stewart County, Tenn. Daniel J. was reared on his father's farm in Tennessee, and at the age of seventeen began his merchantile career as a salesman. In 1855 he formed a partnership with his brother at Clarksville, Tenn. in the dry goods trade, which he continued for one year when he became a resident of Ballard County, Ky. He engaged in agriculture in that and McCracken Counties, until 1862 when he entered the Confederate Army, and served till the close of the war, as Lieutenant in the seventh Kentucky Regiment. At the close of the war he returned and located in Paducah, where he engaged as salesman for a dry goods house until 1869, when he associated with George Rock in the wholesale boot and shoe business. This firm existed twelve years at which time Mr. Fraser retired from the firm. In 1881 he established his present boot and shoe house in connection with J.B. Jones under the firm name of Fraser and Jones, which now constitutes one of the leading business houses of Paducah. Mr. Fraser is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church: a member of the Masonic Order, K.of H.and K.G.R. He was married in 1857 in Robertson County, Tenn., to Miss Sallie A. Daughter of Thomas J. Polk. Their family consists of four sons and four daughters.
