The family first settled in Pennsylvania, but after a short residence removed further west, In early life Mr. Wahl developed a very decided talent and taste for music, and began teaching the science when he was a resident of New Albany, Ind. whence he removed to Bowling Green, Ky., where he taught one year; thence to Hopkinsville, where he remained eight years, when he became the professor in the musical department in a college at Elkton, Todd Co., Ky, He remained in that school four years, when loss of health compelled him to seek different employment, and consequently, in 1837, he removed with his family to Paducah, which has since been his home. Mr. Wahl possesses those sterling business qualifications so characteristic of his nationality and has met with deserved success in his merchantile life in Paducah though not without sustaining severe loss not the least of which was the destruction of his property by the military forces, which infested the city in the time of the civil war. Mr. Wahl is now engaged in merchantile pursuits having a large furniture business at 202 Broadway. In 1850 in New Albany, Ind. he was married to Miss Wilhelmina Schaaf a native of Hanover, Germany. Of the eight children born to them five are living viz; Amelia (wife 0f H. Nagel), James L., Frank, Ella and Albert. Both Mr. and Mrs. Wahl are esteemed members of the German Evangelical Church of Paducah.
