Robert Ernest Stephens and Beatrice Lawson Stephens have helped make it possible for genealogists to work on their family trees without trapsing through the woods. Although on a beautiful day it's not too hard of work. If any errors are noted please email me and I will correct them. I look forward to reading Mr. Stephens history of McCreary County when it is finished. The book is entitled, "A Lost Heritage for a Changing People." I also would like to thank him again for the permission to copy their work. SUMMARY This is one of the oldest cemeteries in McCreary County. There are several monuments inscribed with burial dates prior to the Civil War, and there are more graves unidentified than there are identified. 77 burials can be identified, while 86 are unidentified. The stones inscribed with early burials are: S. T. Ross 1858, A. Ross 1862 and one with initials M. R. 1862. A monument for Thomas M. King given his birth date as 1790, while his wife Mary King was born in 1800. Burials, according to inscribed stones, began 1850-1859 period, and have continued to the present time. The last burial here was Roscoe Sparks in 1985. This cemetery, even though it is known as the Duncan Cemetery, has only three monuments with Duncan names. One of these, Sary Duncain, has bo dates, while two others were after 1913. It appears that the cemetery was here long before the Duncans, unless we find them in unidentified graves. Looking at the statistics it seems that the cemetery was first a burial ground for Rosses, then Daughertys and then Kings. Other early families were Slavens and Troxells. A. B. Slaven was born 25 Jan. 1825. There is a war memorial for Granville Slavey, Co. I, 12th KY. Inf. And, also, A. B. Slaven's is inscribed 25 Jan. 1825-24August 1896, 12 KY, Co. 1 Enft. He was, undoubtedly, a veteran of the Civil War and as Granville Slavey's stone shows no dates, we wonder if Granville Slavey was not the son of A. B. Slaven. The inscription of A. B. Slaven's gives evidence to our theory that we have many veterans, even Revolutionary War and War of 1812, buried in unidentified graves, for here an old Civil War veterans inscription was home made. Also, at this cemetery, we have graves for 27 members of the Daugherty family. To show the many proliferations of a name, we find their names written as: Daugherty, Dougherity, Dorigherty, Dougherty and Dority, while nearby we find Dardy Br. The cemetery is off the beaten path, in the midst of the forest. On the day we were there a very large Copperhead snake retreated into the woods alongside. We let him go. Once the cemetery drew many people on Decoration Day and at times of new interments as shown by the shelter built alongside now rotting and unuseable. However, now it seems grass doesn't want to grow here and the grounds are poorly attended. Most of the people buried here are 2 or 3 generations removed and the old cemetery is being forgotten. [Unfortunately it is still being forgotten.]
