Robert Ernest Stephens and Beatrice Lawson Stephens have helped make it possible for genealogists to work on their family trees without trapsing through the woods. Although on a beautiful day it's not too hard of work. If any errors are noted please email me and I will correct them. I look forward to reading Mr. Stephens history of McCreary County when it is finished. The book is entitled, "A Lost Heritage for a Changing People." I also would like to thank him again for the permission to copy their work. McCreary County Kentucky Cemeteries Vol. I published 1990 Author, Robert Ernest Stephens Copied as written with permission/Kenna Austin Cemetery Name: Holt # 1 Nearby Town: Pine Knot Graves identifiable: 0 Unidentifiable: 4 Date Copied: April 26, 1987 Location: From the junction of KY 92 and US 27 at the red light in Pine Knot travel 2.1 miles NE to KY 1044. Then continue NE toward Gilreath, cross Clear Cr. And go to the Luther Hamlin place. From the junction of KY 1044 and KY 92 go 1.3 miles along KY 1044. The Luther Hamlin place is on the right and the old cemetery, which no longer has any identifying marks, is found South of the home of Nellie Cox Hamlin Stephens. Ray Hamlin, son of Luther Hamlin and Nellie, says that it was an old "Holt place" and that 4 graves were located here. SUMMARY Luther Hamlin and his wife Nellie Cox Hamlin moved to this location in 1938. At that time there were several graves located 100 feet to the rear of the house where a chicken house was later built. She was told about the graves, after her husband had purchased the home. He told her, "Now it really won't bother us that these graves are here." The graves were marked only with unidentified field stones. They were removed and the land used for agricultural purposes. Several people, Dean Kidd's mother, Mrs. Nellie Hamlin and others, remember this being a Holt burying place. The land has now been planted in grass and has been purchased by Mr. Drex Campbell. Mrs. Nellie Cox Hamlin Stephens, after Luther died she married Dewey Stephens, will reside here until her death. At which time she says, "Mr. Campbell will probably tear down her home." The house will undoubtedly some day be torn down and the little cemetery behind it will no longer be identified with any known man-made feature, thereby returning it to obscurity in the earth that once gave nurture and sustenance to the Holts, who were some of our earliest settlers. They took up Tellico Grants in this area in the early 1800's.
