Robert Ernest Stephens and Beatrice Lawson Stephens have helped make it possible for genealogists to work on their family trees without trapsing through the woods. Although on a beautiful day it's not too hard of work. If any errors are noted please email me and I will correct them. I look forward to reading Mr. Stephens history of McCreary County when it is finished. The book is entitled, "A Lost Heritage for a Changing People." I also would like to thank him again for the permission to copy their work. SUMMARY The Holt Cemetery, as it is shown on the topographic map, is near the head waters of the Rock Creek drainage that goes into Jellico Creek. At this location the first inscribed burial monument is that of Champ C. Duncan. His is also the earliest birthday. He lived from 3 November 1806 to 4 November 1904. Even though this is called the Holt Cemetery, we find only one inscribe stone with the name James Holt, born 12 December 1888 and died 12 August 1963, buried here. There are also initials for burials from the early Duncan family, namely S. D. and C. C. D. The grave for C. C. D. has the year 1811 inscribed on the stone, and this could be a death date. There are still other graves with field stones inscribed with initials M. A. and D. A. None of the stones with initials only, with the exception of C. C. D., have dates. It seems to this writer that this is an old Duncan Cemetery. We have 9 Duncans interred and only 4 Holts. The Duncan graves, also seem to be inscribed with earlier dates. We wonder! This little cemetery, perched precariously half way up the mountain, has several granite monuments, that have replace eroded field stones. It was once enclosed with a woven wire field fence. Today, it si over grown with small pines. The fence posts have rotted away, and there seems to be a lack of attention to the graves. Some of the older stones have toppled onto the graves, and other field stones have been tossed to one side. It is a beautiful location, so far up the mountain, we wonder how these families - Holts, Duncans, Perrys and Stephens - came to choose this place to bury their dead. Champ C. Or Champion C. Duncan was a Justice of the Peace in Campbell Co. Tenn. From 1846-1848. Now this is McCreary Co., KY. Could N. H. be Noah Hold and D. H. be Daniel Or Drury Holt? These gentlemen had Tellico grants on Pleasant Run and Marsh Creek about 1813. James Holt is probably one of their descendants. This must be an original burying ground for the Holt-Duncan families.
