Robert Ernest Stephens and Beatrice Lawson Stephens have helped make it possible for genealogists to work on their family trees without trapsing through the woods. Although on a beautiful day it's not too hard of work. If any errors are noted please email me and I will correct them. I look forward to reading Mr. Stephens history of McCreary County when it is finished. The book is entitled, "A Lost Heritage for a Changing People." I also would like to thank him again for the permission to copy their work. McCreary County Kentucky Cemeteries Vol. I published 1990 Author, Robert Ernest Stephens Copied as written with permission/Kenna Austin Roberts Cemetery Nearby Town: Hilltop/Yamacraw Date(s) copied: 11Mar1986 Number of Graves identifiable by inscription: 2 Number of Graves Unidentifiable: 17 Location: From Yamacraw highway bridge across the Big South Fork on KY 92 take KY 1363 SW along Rock Creek past Oz and Paint Cliff to White Oak Junction, where you turn SSE towards the Guy Kidd store and old home. Just after crossing Rock Creek over a concrete bridge you'll find the old K & T railroad bed. Turn back NE along the old railroad bed and continue to the place where a railroad bridge crossed Rock Creek. At this point continue on a faint trail SE almost to the mouth of Schoolhouse Branch, then turn at the point where the school house stood and go WSW to the first bench actually, it is SW of Paint Cliff but across the creek and only cab be reached by crossing Rock Creek, which can now only be done at White Oak Junction or Devils Creek Rd. The site is now almost overgrown with briars and trees. ROBERTS, (No dates) As per Mr. George Troxell of Williamsburg St. (KY 478), Whitley City, KY 42653. B. D. (No dates) Grave is enclosed in field rocks set on their edge. H. W. (One date) 1882 Field stone marker. SUMMARY These graves, approximately 19, are located on a bench SW of the old school house site above Schoolhouse Branch and Rock Creek. Two of these graves have field stones embedded in the soil all around to form a rectangle. One of these is not marked and the other has B. D. inscribed on the field rock. Another field stone is inscribed H. W. 1882. This is the only dated grave in the cemetery, and we interpret it to mean, H. W. Died in 1882. There are several unidentified graves of children, and we believe these are Roberts children. According to Mr. George Troxel, a Mr. Joe Roberts lived near the graves. Relda Troxel married Talbert Roberts, who had children buried at Paint Cliff on the Roberts Farm. Some of Relda and Talberts' children were Elisha, Grant and Georgia Lee; however, they are not buried at Paint Cliff. This cemetery has just about disappeared into the surroundings. It is on U. S. Forest Service land, and access along the old road on the south side of Rock Creek is limited to hiking through the brush. It is SW of the mining debris at Paint Cliff. In my opinion, those buried here are some of our earliest pioneers and their graves should be preserved. Only the U. S. Forest Service could bring this about.
