A place is vacant in our home. Which never can be filled. WORLEY, Janie 10Oct1854 6April1907 SUMMARY The Troxell Cemetery is south of the 1st Otter Creek Church. Both are located on the west side of the road as you go toward Tapley Branch. This cemetery was probably established when the 1st Otter Creek United Baptist Church was organized in 1865, or about the time of the end of the War of Rebellion. Living in the vicinity were two brothers, Jacob Troxell, Sr. and Peter Troxell. The first identified burial is Flemmon C. Troxell on 14 March 1882. There are 33 unidentified graves that have been amassed since the cemetery began and there are about 137 identified burials. Most of these are Rosses, 35, Troxells, 19, and Tapleys, 23. As you can see the Ross family has use the cemetery more than any other group. The people living here with birth dates in the early 1800's were: Sary Douglas, 1819; K. K. Douglas, 2 April 1819; Elizabeth Williams, 1 November 1820. (If Jacob (Big Jake) Troxell is buried in an unmarked grave, as his family says, being born in 1758, his birth would be much earlier.) The cemetery was used 6 times in the 1880-1889 time period, with the peak period being 1920-1929, when 28 burials were made. Again, activity was reduced until 1970-1979, when 19 people were interned. As the cemetery is close to the Big South Fork, and families who lived here were forced to move away, it will probably show less and less use in the future. It is near the headwaters of Salt Branch and not far from the mouth of Bear Creek and on the Eastern side of the Big South Fork. Here Beatty and Huling must have crossed the river as they searched for salt and found oil in 1818. So we know people were living here in those early days. "Big Jake" Troxell is believed to be buried here in an unmarked grave. The last burial here was on 16 June 1986, when Elige Ross was interned. This is an interesting cemetery. All stones are turned toward the East, as is the custom. There is one Welch type grave, two Troxells with Civil War monuments and old carvings that date back in the early 1800's, which are still readable. The cemetery is well cared for, neat, and the grass is mowed and trimmed nicely. There are a few broken stones, but not many. There is no evidence of any stones that are completely destroyed. =====================================================================
