CEMETERIES: UPPER MARSH CREEK CEMETERY, Pine Knot, McCreary Co., KY Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 12:28:47 -0500 Submitted by: Kenna Austin -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert Ernest Stephens "McCreary County, Kentucky Cemeteries" books would not have been possible without alot of hard work. Robert Ernest Stephens and Beatrice Lawson Stephens have helped make it possible for genealogists to work on their family trees without trapsing through the woods. Although on a beautiful day it's not too hard of work. If any errors are noted please email me and I will correct them. I look forward to reading Mr. Stephens history of McCreary County when it is finished. The book is entitled, "A Lost Heritage for a Changing People." I also would like to thank him again for the permission to copy their work. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- McCreary County Kentucky Cemeteries Vol. II Published 1990 Author, Robert Ernest Stephens Copied as written with permission/Kenna Austin Cemetery Name: Upper Marsh Creek Nearby Town: Pine Knot Graves identifiable: 150 Unidentifiable: 36 Date Copied: Sep 11, 1986 Location: From intersection ok KY 92 and US 27 at Pine Knot go East on KY 92 to KY 592. Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not. For such is the kingdom of God. SUMMARY This is a very old cemetery. The earliest recorded burial is Vina Murphy 1843. Actually, the cemetery is near the place where Murphy Cr. empties into Marsh Creek.About .6 mile farther West on the North Bank of Murphy Cr. Is the Privett Cemetery. The Upper Marsh Creek Cemetery has at least 36 graves marked with field stone only. This is probably a low number, when you consider that it has been in continual use since 1843, and probably before that date. There are several people buried here with birth dates about 1810. Rev. William L. Lay was born 25 December 1809. Rachel Stephens, 28 May 1812. I. M. Hamby, 15 May 1818 and Joon Perry, 11 Aparil 1819. The land was a part of the original Tellico grants. All along Marsh Cr., an it's tributaries: Perkins Cr., Trammell Fk., Hayes Cr., and Osborne Cr., this rich bottom land was ideal farming soil. Here we find the Neals, Stephens, Hayes, Perkins, Meadors, Meadows, Hambys, Woods, Wests, Lays and others in the 1800's, as they cleared the bottoms and established farming operations. The road (now KY 1470) passed along the creek above the cemetery. It was decided to move the road to its present location nearer to the creek and at the Northern edge of the flood plain. When this was done some graves had to be mvoed and a rock wall was built to keep other graves and the lower edge of the cemetery from eroding away. One grave monument of special interest is inscribed W. W. 24 January 1848. Was this a West or Woods? If anyone knows it should be marked now so that the future generations will know. It is a beautiful location and even though the gradient of the land is really prohibitive to mowing, it is kept mowed and neat. The cemetery had its peak usage from 1900-1909, when there were 19 burials. These graves proceeded the organization of McCrearay Co. And with the influence of Sothern Railroad, members of these families moved on into Pine Knot and Whitley City. In recent years, the land has been ravished by strip mining operations and the creeks are filling with sediment and mine wastes, so that other families have been forced to leave. Only the little graveyards, and a few determined families remain. Their silent occupants, still attest to the orgin of many of the people now living in McCreary County. The last burial prior to this inventory was Grover C. Taylor, 25 Aug. 1985. The cemetery has little room for expansion. *************************************************************************** USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit, or for presentation by any other organization or persons.
