CEMETERIES: Wilson/Spradlin [Josh Wilson] Cemetery - McCreary Co., KY Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 06:58:29 -0500 Submitted by: Kenna Austin -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert Ernest Stephens "McCreary County, Kentucky Cemeteries" books would not have been possible without alot of hard work. Robert Ernest Stephens and Beatrice Lawson Stephens have helped make it possible for genealogists to work on their family trees without traipsing through the woods. Although on a beautiful day it's not too hard of work. If any errors are noted please email me and I will correct them. I look forward to reading Mr. Stephens history of McCreary County when it is finished. The book is entitled, "A Lost Heritage for a Changing People." I also would like to thank him again for the permission to copy their work. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- McCreary County Kentucky Cemeteries Vol. II published 1990 Author, Robert Ernest Stephens Copied as written with permission/Kenna Austin -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cemetery Name: Wilson/Spradlin - [Josh Wilson Cemetery] Nearby Town: Strunk Graves identifiable: 141 Unidentifiable: 49 Date Copied: July 18 1986 Location: From US 27 in the Strunk area, where KY 1470 goes West, cross Southern Railroad tracks and continue 1.2 miles. SUMMARY Even though it is called the Wilson Cemetery, the first burial was Burrel Spradlin born 7 Oct 1877 and died 19 Aug 1894. Mary Wilson, wife of Benjiman Wilson, was interred on 6 Sep 1895, and Cory Wilson died on 20 April 1897. Cory Wilson was the daughter of Joshua and Silvany Wilson. Therefore, in order differentiate, this Wilson Cemetery from others, we will list it as the Wilson/Spradlin. Here we fine 190 graves of which 141 can be identified and 49 are unidentified with field stone markers. The person buried with the earliest birth date is John Green born 21 June 1841. The last burial prior to this inventory, was Gladys King on 19 Oct 1985. Other early burial were members of the King family. There have been burials for each ten year period since 1890, usually 12 to 18, except for the 1970-1979 years, when there were 29 dead interred. The cemetery is on a beautiful knoll in the center of cultivated fields all around. Looking at it from KY 1470, it seems to be completely surrounded by trees. When we visited the fence was broken down and cattle had been on the grounds. Again, it is a beautiful location, and, undoubtedly was the first burying ground for many of our early citizens prior to the time McCreary Co. was formed. *************************************************************************** USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit, or for presentation by any other organization or persons.
