OBITS: KING, Rufus - 22 Mar 1950 - McCreary Co, KY Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 14:23:01 -0400 Submitted by: "Bobbie Ivey-Lewallen" OBITS FROM THE WEST UNION ASSOCIATION OF UNITED BAPTISTS MINUTES King, Rufus-Born July 13, 1872, deceased March 22, 1950, being 77 years, 8 months and 9 days old. He was born at Strunk, Ky., then a part of Whitley Co., Ky. He joined the Mt. Pleasant United Baptist Church in his early youth. He remained a member there until he moved to Pine Knot and united with the Pine Knot United Baptist Church. He has been a Deacon of the Church since 1911. In 1890 he was united in marriage to Amanda Murphy, who preceded him in death in 1943. To this union was born 8 children, Mrs. Cora Wilson and Mrs. Kizzie Lay, both deceased. Remaining to mourn his absence are: Lawrence King and Alonzo King of Miami, Florida, George King of California, Paul King and Samantha Cordell of Rockwood, Tenn., Mrs. Lora Vickery of Pine Knot, Ky., 50 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Golman King and Ebb King of Pine Knot, Ky.; 3 sisters, Nellie Ross of Pine Knot, Ky., Sarah Murphy and Elizabeth Daugherty. Growing up on the South Fork River without any school, he understood the handicaps of people without an education. He founded a school at Hulan Branch. He learned himself how to read and write after he was 30 years old. He was a school trustee for 35 years, being chairman for 10 years. He will be sadly missed by all the people in the south end of McCreary County.
