STEPHEN HANNA GROOMS was born July 2, 1838, in Elkton, Todd Co., Ky. His father, Dr. Hiram Butler Grooms, a native of Culpeper County, Va., was reared in Scott County, Ky. He practiced medicine at Vevay, Ind., then at Hickman, Ky., and about 1838 located at Elkton, where he practiced until his death, October 6, 1857, at the age of fifty-seven years. His brother, Col. Horatio, a soldier in the war of 1812, burnt the barn on the battle-field at River Raisin, and was lieutenant-colonel from Kentucky, in the Mexican war. Thornton and Charles were also his brothers and Elizabeth (Goul), his sister. Hiram B. married Nancy Hanna, of Allensville (probably born in Mercer County, died December 20, 1856, aged fifty-seven years); daughter of Stephen Hanna, Sr., native of Pennsylvania, and a soldier in the Revolutionary war; Elizabeth Forman, a native of Virginia, was Stephen Hanna, Sr,'s wife. From the union of Hiram B. and Nancy Grooms sprang Stephen H., who was married September 18, 1867, to Miss Virginia A. daughter of Fielding and Adelaid (Halliard), Bush, of Clark County, born February 20, 1847, and to them have been born Horace Bass (deceased), Walter Bush (deceased), Stephen Madison and Forrest B. In 1857 Stephen H. commenced the study of medicine with Dr. McReynolds of Elkton, and graduated in 1859 at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, practiced first at Elkton, and to some extent at his present location of the pike, two miles south of Pleasant Hill, Mercer County, to which he came in 1869. The Doctor is also engaged in farming, having 150 acres of and in a high state of cultivation. He is a Royal Arch Mason and an Ancient Odd Fellow; is a member of the Christian Church and is a Democrat.
