In 1850 he removed to Marion County, and in 1857 returned to Boyle, where he has since resided. His father, James Gray, was born December 29, 1788, near Prince Edwards C. H. Va., removed in childhood with his parents to Mercer County, Ky., and located at the head of Doctor's Fork; was a farmer and slave owner; an elder in the Christian Church; a Whig, and died in 1856. He was the son of John Gray, a native of Virginia, an early settler in Kentucky, a Revolutionary soldier, a Presbyterian, and died about 1835, aged seventy-five years. John Gray married Lucy Jones, of Virginia, and their offspring were James, John, Archie, Sr., Charles, Jane (Sandifer), Polly (Huberry), Lucy (Webster), Patsey (Kinley), and Nancy (Pipes). James Gray married Elizabeth Gray, and the result of their union was Robert, John, William, Archie, Charles, Mary (Richeson), Lucy (Kelsie), Sarah (Boling), and Nancy (Holland). Archie Gray was married, February 2, 1843, to Miss Martha A., daughter of Isaac and Nancy (Stone) Montgomery, of Boyle County, (born May 31, 1820), and to them have been born Isaac M., Nancy E. (Harmon), and Sallie K. (Wade). In August, 1885, Mr. Gray was elected magistrate, and member of the court of claims, of Boyle County, which position he now retains. He is a farmer and stock raiser and owns over 300 acres of land, one half of which is well improved and in a good state of cultivation, and a portion of which he has distributed among his children. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity; of the Good Templars, and is an active member of the Christian Church. He was formerly an old line Whig, but is now a Democrat.
