He came home from prayer meeting Wednesday night complaining of feeling ill and grew rapidly worse until the end came. During the Spanish-American war he enlisted as a volunteer and while camped at Chickamagua his health became very much impaired and he had never been of a robust nature since. He was a young man with winning personality and had a host of friends. Beside other gifts he possessed a remarkably fine voice, and for a number of years sang in the vested choir of St. Phillip’s church as well as in the choir at his own church. In announcing his death from the pulpit Sunday Dr. Buckner, who was not only his pastor, but a warm personal friend, said in the past year and a half he was never known to miss a service. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. .J. M. Bixler, and beside his parents leaves two sisters, Mrs. J. T. Nevins and Miss Ann Bixler, and one small brother, The funeral services, which were largely attended took place (at) the Christian church Monday at 2 o’clock, conducted by Dr. M. G. Buckner and the remains were laid to rest in Spring Hill cemetery by the Knights of Pythias and the order of Red Men, as he was a member in high standing in both lodges.
