CHAMPION Venerable Citizen of Shaker Bend Mr. John H. Champion, one of the most highly esteemed citizens of Shaker Bend, died Sunday morning at an early hour of the infirmities of age. He was eighty-four years old, and a man widely known throughout the county, and especially liked for his sincerity and his genial hospitable disposition. His table and his house were always open to his friends but they received no heartier welcome than the stranger within his gate. He was one of the few old settlers, who had not gone to that “bourne from which not traveler returns,” and he was full of quaint stories and reminiscences of the early days, which make him an interesting and much soughtafter companion. It was his wish that his son, Mr. George Champion should make his coffin, and he was laid to rest in a casket whose fashioning was a sorrowful mission of love. The funeral took place Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the family homestead in Shaker Bend and he was buried there in the little plot of ground, sanctified by the dust of his kindred. Beside a wife, whose love and helpfulness have cheered his way for many a year, he leaves three sons, Messrs. James, George E, and John P. Champion and one daughter, Mrs. Kate Ison, all of whom are well known and highly respected citizens of Shaker Bend.
