M. S. FIFE President of Local Chapter U.D.C. Passes Away. Friday morning at 5 o’clock the spirit of one of the best known and most venerable women in the community passed away when death claimed Mrs. M. S. Fife. She was eighty-three years of age, and had been ill but a week with pneumonia. Her funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at St. Philip’s Episcopal church, conducted by Rector H. E. Spears, and she was laid to rest in Spring Hill. Mrs. Fife held the respect of everybody. She was a native of this place, born Sarah Smedley, and in her young girlhood was married to Dr. Matthew S. Fife, of St. Louis. After her marriage she resided in that city a number of years, and for a while in South America. Later they returned to Harrodsburg where they lived until Dr. Fife’s death about four years ago. Mrs. Fife was a devoted member of St. Philips church and never lost her energy and interest in working for its betterment. She was also an active member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy and was its president at the time of her death. The chapter attended the funeral in a body, and among the many floral offerings was a handsome design from them. Her pall-bearers were her nephews, Messrs. Lafon Riker, William Riker, Francis Lafon, Riker Kyle, C. D. Thompson, and Mr. Henry Soaper, a young friend and fellow church member. She leaves two sisters, Miss Ovie Smedley and Mrs. Langdon Stockton and a brother, Mr. F. W. Smedley, besides many other relatives here (HH Thu Nov 29, 1906).
