PENSION: William M. Bastin's Lane witness for his Pension File, Metcalfe Co., Kentucky All of these pension file emails have been reproduced with the permission of Gary & Glenda Bastin. Glenda is the one that submitted the pension files to the Bastin-L list. Thanks Glenda! Further confirmation that Thomas 'Tommie' Bastin III and his wife Louanna Shofner Bastin moved in 1859 or 1860 with their eldest son William M. Bastin! Tommie and Louanna were living 3/4 mile north of Center, KY when he died. I wonder if they moved there in 1859-1860. Also, William is of the first BASTIN generation for which evidence exists of attending school! On Tommie's marriage bond, Tommie could not or did not, sign his name, making only a mark. This was in 1840. Yet, on pension papers after the Civil War, Tommie did sign his name. Perhaps he learned to write simultaneous to when his children attended school during the 1850's! These pension papers are proving very interesting! Does anyone know if there are any grammar school enrollment records still in existence for Metcalfe County, KY from the 1850's? -- Gary Bastin Date: Tue, 23 Jun 1998 01:11:12 From: Glenda Bastin To: gbastin@bb.iu.net Subject: J.B.Lane - Neighbor of Wm M Bastin State of Kentucky County of Metcalfe In the pension claim of William M.
