This copy contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives. During the Civil War, both sides were having a tendency to burn the courthouses and homes of the opposing faction in the area of Monroe County, Kentucky and Clay County, Tennessee. During Morgan's raid, Lavesta took her prized posessions to the Rhoton Cave near her home. Up on a ledge, she placed her family bible, a new portrait of herself, a sugar bowl with a silver spoon, and a cream pitcher. Water dripping in the cave during the remaining years of the Civil War, ruined the bible to the extent that nothing of the beginning of the bible remains up to Noah getting on the Ark. Therefore there is no way to date this Bible other than pre-Civil War. The leather-bound front and rear cover are somewhat intact, but the binding is gone. It measures 9 by 11 1/2 inches and is about 3 inches thick. Also kept in the Bible were governmental and religous pamphlets owned by Phillip Emmert, father of William Jordan. Phillip was a deacon at the original Mill Creek Church now known as Old Mulkey Meeting House State Shrine in Tompkinsville. He served in the War of 1812 and was active in politics. There are copies of: "Remarks Of Mr. Buchanan, Of Pennsylvania On Mr Chilton's Reolution To Retrench The Expenditures Of The General Government", made Feb. 4, 1828; "The Christain Preacher", printed in Lexington 1838; Anual Report Of The Board Of Improvement Of The State Of Kentucky" printed in Frankfort 1840. The Bible was handed down, mother to daughter, to my grandmother, Myrtle Crawford Jobe. She gave it to me in 1985. I extracted the birth, marriage, and death pages from the Bible and placed them protective covers to slow their disintegration until they can be preserved. There are at least 4 different styles of handwriting done in black and purple ink and pencil. Where blanks exist, the page was torn away. Births page 1 Column 1 Wm. J.
