News May 24, 1934 The Legion Auxiliary was selling poppies on the streets of T'ville in observance of Poppy day; proceeds to help needy families of Legionnaires next winter. (I remember Poppy Day - do you?) Between 25 and 30,000 Kentuckians paraded at the State Capital in an attempt to persuade the General Assembly to pass the sales tax. Nearly 200 of the paraders were from Monroe Co. Most of them came from T'ville and Flippin with Fountain Run and other towns represented. Dr. B L BRADSHAW led the Monroe Co group; S T HAGAN was active and Col Cass ROSS was in the delegation. A peition againstthe sales tax was circulated in T'ville; Senator W C FARMER pledged against the tax. Meanwhile Gamaliel builds electric lines. The town to have electric lighting and power; planing on building a line from TN & use Tennessee Light & Power current. $750 had already been pledged; the rate for users will be 8 1/2 cents per kilowatt hour. The power department head assured Gamaliel that they will have 8 free street lights. Mr. GARSIDE from Lexington led games at the meeting of the Gamaliel busy Bee 4- H Club on May 17th. Miss Edith CRABTREE presided at the meeting held at the school auditorium. Deputy Sheriff Felin FORD and Constable J C JONES of Gamaliel, with peace officers from TN last Friday arrested Joe HARLIN, Cordell HARLIN and Will BROOKS as they slept near the Cropper School. They found two barrels of "beer" from which the officers believed they were making whiskey. No still was found. Prisoners were taken to Bowling Green to appear in Federal Court. The Grand Jury in Bowling Green handled Monroe Co cases. No indictment was returned against Porter CRAWFORD on whose farm a still was found last month by Federal Agents. Carl YORK of Walnut Shade TN was sentenced to a year and a day for possession of liquor found in a car driven by Claude BRYANT. Bryant sentended to 3 months in jail in Bowling Green. Luther JACKSON and Virgil "Broadway" YOKLEY, at whose home W E KINGERY, Paul CARTER and Felin FORD found 6 gallons of moonshine in Jan,was sentenced to 3 months in Warren Co jail. Paul PEDEN and Jewell ALLEN of Cedar Hill were sent up for 3 months on a charge of tearing down mail boxes on the Glasgow Pike. On Monday, officials discovered a copper still near Cropper school, supposed to be the property of Joe HARLAN and Will BROOKS who were arrested. James CHISM Post American Legion members are laying plans for th eusual observance of Independence Day in T'ville July 4. There will be patriotic speaking in the forenoon, base ball in the afternoon and free fire works at ight. Smith BUSHONG, a life-time resident of Monroe County, died Wed night at his home near Forkton due to a serious burn and complications following that. He was born and reared on the farm where he died. His only child, a son, Baker BUSHONG, preceeded him in death some 10-15 years. Services were held at Mt Gilead at 1 o'clock, Friday, 18 May. The church could not accomodate the crowd so services were held in the grove. Bros J H SWANN, M T PHEMISTER and C E CARTER were in charge. He is survived by his widow, Laura DICKERSON Bushong. On SUnday, May 20, friends and relatives of John HARLAN arrived at his home at the noon hour with well filled baskets to surprise him on his 46th birthday. He was completely surprised and said to Mrs Harlan, "Is it a funeral procession?" as he saw the cars arriving. A bountiful dinner was soon spread in the shade on the lawn and enjoyed by all present. Those present were: Mr and Mrs J K BAXTER, Mary DOYLE BAXTER, Mr and Mrs J T HARLAN, Mr and Mrs C B HALL, Frank Hall, Leroy Hall, Mr and Mrs R C GRIDER and children, Frank, Irene and Catherine Grider, Mr and Mrs Herod HOLLOWAY, Walton Holloway, Miss Ravnelle Holloway, Drexell Holloay, Dewey FROEDGE, Thelma and Geneva CROWE and Mr and Mrs John HARLAN and children Doris, Herman Morris and Mary Joe Harlan. Harold B. DYER, the 12-yr old son of Mr & Mrs George Dyer of T'ville, died Thursday after, May 17. He had only been sick one week with pneumonia. Services were conducted at Mt Poland with Bro M T PHEIMISTER officiating. He is survived by his parents and a younger brother. When the Court of Appeals reversed the Monroe Circuit Court in the case of Elisha BIRDWELL to set aside an injunction halting the building of a sandwich wagon in the T'ville Fire Zone, it opened up the way for others. E H RICH moved in on the YOKLEY lot next to the WHITE- HILL Motor Co. Mr. Birdell went to work the next morning hastening the completion of his wagon on the Birdwelllot. Another lot, owned by BRADSHAW-HAGAN, is still vacant at this writing. No one with a nickle need to go hungry in T'ville. Mrs. Fred SHIRLEY entertained Sat, May 19, at her home, a party celebrating the 7th birthday of Gene. Games & refreshments were served. Those present were: Misses Mary Jo ARTERBURY, Sarah MARRS, Pansy PAGE, Sue Pearl CRABTREE, Elaine WILLIAMS, Mary GRINDSTAFF, Mildred FORD, Juanita ROSS, Wanda ROSS, Jo Ann EMMERT, Marjorie WHITESIDES, Irene GRIDER,Katherine GRIDER, Lucy Del KEYS, Gene and Joyce SHIRLEY. Masters: Timmy WILLIAMS, Clifton LANDRUM, Bobby RUSH, Joe HAGAN, George Bryant HAGAN, Harold PEDIGO and Freddie Gale SHIRLEY. Mr and Mrs Rhea SPECK of Scottsville KY visited Mrs Fred SHIRLEY and other relatives Sunday. Ollie J WHEAT succumbs to injuries after fall. Funeral services were held last Friday at the Bethlehem Church at Mud Lick. Death folowed a fall from a new barn on which he was working a week ago Saturday. His back was broken. He leaves a wife and seven children, parents, and an aged aunt who is dependent on him. He was Superinendent of the Sunday School at Bethlehem; a school trustee and a member of the Church Board of Stewards. Surving is his wife, Lena SMITH before marriage in 1919 and 7 children: Morris, Guy, Veneda, Amos, Edward, Vera and Wilma Jean. A brother, Alva, lives at South Bend IN. Masonic services were used, Bro YANCY preached and extolled the Christian character of Mr. Wheat and his devotion to the church.
