Obituary of Cullom D. Cantrell 1896 Monroe Co., KY Glasgow (KY) Weekly Times, 2 Dec 1896. "Killing at Tompkinsville. Walter Leslie, a young man about eighteen or nineteen years of age, is in jail at Tompkinsville charged with the murder of a fruit-tree agent by the name of Cullom D. Cantrell, of Smithville, Tenn. The killing occurred at the notorious resort of a woman by the name of Ret Jackson, about a mile from Tompkinsville. "Tuesday of last week, Cantrell was in Tompkinsville, and was going around town with young Leslie. About three o'clock in the evening the men left for the house of the Jackson woman, and about an hour afterwards the killing occurred. Leslie immediately went to town and surrendered himself to Sheriff Patterson, claiming that Cantrell was approaching him with a knife at the time the fatal shot was fired. Cantrell died instantly. "It was not at first known who Cantrell was, but investigation developed the fact that he was a fruit tree agent of Smithville. When he first came to Tompkinsville he claimed to be a professional gambler. The body was claimed by the father of the deceased and taken to Smithville for burial. "Young Leslie is a son of Mr. Emerson Leslie, who was at one time jailer of Monroe county, and who is a brother of Governor Leslie, of Montana, and Hon. J. Rowan Leslie, of Tompkinsville. Walter Leslie is regaraded as a wild young fellow, but worthless rather than vicious. He is hardly more than a boy. "Ret Jackson, the woman in the case, is one of most notorious women of her class in this section. Years ago, she was well-known in Glasgow, but for the last decade she has lived in the vicinity of Tompkinsville and has been a constant source of worry to the officials and to decent peoople. There were more or less, suspicious circumstances surrounding the killing, and she was arrested and placed in jail, charges withc omplicity in the murder, along with young Leslie. "The examining trial is now in progress.
