He was at one time in finecircumstances, but all hisproperty was swept away by the war. In every walk of life,Mr. Courtney was atrue man and Christian, and has beyond doubt gone to hisreward. The followingtribute from the pen of one who knew him long and wellvoices the sentiment ofthe community toward him:the community toward him: "I desire, through your columns, to give expression to thesorrow that pervadedmy heart when it was announced on last Wednesday that my oldand often-triedfriend, Mr. A. J. Courtney, was dead. Although he had livedbeyond the Divinelimit of three score-years-and ten, and by reason of theinfirmities of hisadvanced age, death was not a surprise; yet, the true, noblecharacter he hadbuilded, the many deeds of kindness he had done, and thegentle nature hepossessed, brought sorrow to those who knew him best whenlearning that themerciless messenger had come and claimed him. The highestcompliment that wecan express in reference to our departed friend is that hewas at trueChristian gentleman. Devotion to his friends, honest in hisconvictions andcharity and kindness to all were some of his noblecharacteristics. For anumber of years I lived in his house and ate at thehospitable board, consequently can say with truth that a better and granderman never lived.Devoted to his family as only a gentleman can be,misfortunes heavy and darkhad beclouded his long and useful life, the ravages of acivil war had sweptaway his property, yet, with that patriotism and chivalrythat alwayscharacterizes a true Southern heart, he submissively gave upall rather thansurrender his principle. Like a true hero, he bowed with amurmer to theinevitable. "He leaves surviving him a loving a devoted companion - one that someone knows but to love-possession the same beautiful ttraits of character as her departed husband. "May our common Father in HIs beneveloence give her manypeaceful and happyyears, and at the end crown and reward her with everlastingjoy, is theinvocation of "A FRIEND."invocation of "A FRIEND."
