The original data was derived from microfilm of the original case file index dockets at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives in Frankfort, Kentucky. Ford & Nagle has granted permission to the KDLA to make use of this index in the reference room at Frankfort. Two indexes are included, one that is alphabetized by plaintiff and one that is alphabetized by defendant. Ongoing work continues to crosscheck for omissions between the defendant docket and the plaintiff docket; this index was created using the plaintiff docket. Please note: If you are using the defendant index, all the petitions to the court are listed at the end of the index. If you are using the plaintiff index, they will be found in their proper alphabetical order. It will be recalled by those who have studied the history of Montgomery County, Kentucky that the County courthouse in Mount Sterling was burned twice by Morgan’s Confederate troops during the Civil War. Although a few case files survived the fires, the vast majority were destroyed, thus the reason for most cases dating from the Civil War up to 1892 when the dockets used for this index end. The headings across the top of the database page represent, in order, the year the case was filed with the court, the year the case was closed and taken from the docket, the circuit order book and page number where the case may be found and the box and bundle number of the physical case papers. Using the archives’ accession folders for the Montgomery Circuit Court, one will be able to locate the original case papers. Ford & Nagle wishes those using our index the best of luck in their search. Please contact us for costs if you would like to obtain a copy of this CD for your own use. Sincerely, Eric C.
