For and in consideration of the past services faithfully rendered me by Negro 
man slave Edmund, who is now about twenty five years old, and for and in 
consideration of the promises made by me as his master to manumit him upon the 
performance of his said services I hereby manumit and set free the said Edmund 
for the residue of his natural life hereby acknowledging that he is from this 
day henceforth as free to all intents and purposes, as by the laws of Kentucky 
I as his owner and master can make him. In testimony whereof I have hereunto 
set my hand and affixed my seal this 1st day of January 1838.

A Deed of Emancipation from John Garrett to Edmund a colored man about the age 
of twenty five years was produced in court, and acknowledged by the said John 
Garrett to be his act and deed, examined approved and ordered to be recorded 
which is done accordingly.
