Mrs. Margaret (Lee) Randolph was notified Wednesday, Dec. 18, that her son, Richard Randolph had been killed Monday, Dec. 16 in Vietnam. The 25-year-old soldier was scheduled to return to the United States in March. He had been in Vietnam since February, 1968. Prior to that he had served a tour of duty in Germany. The hand-delivered letter from the Department of Defense to Mrs. Randolph stated that Sp/4 Richard Wayne Randolph, USS 6702975, Co. B, First Battalion, 12th Cavalry of the First Cavalry Division (Airmobile) died from wounds received while on combat operation engaging hostile forces in fire fight at 1930 hours (7:30 p.m.) Monday, December 16. He attended Greenville High School and was a member of the Rowland Memorial Baptist Church. Specialist Randolph was due to have been discharged March 10. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marie Randolph of Nevada; brother, Johnny Randolph; two sisters, Mrs. Barbara Maxwell and Miss Jetta Randolph, all of Greenville; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Lee of Greenville. It is expected to be eight to 10 days before the body is returned for funeral services and burial.
