There are several letters, from researchers wanting information, which are included in the pension file. I have not transcribed those. This was found at NARA. Microfilm Series # 804 Roll #285 John Bone S14981 North Carolina Service 7301 (possibly Certificate #) Kentucky John Bone of Muhlenberg County, in the State of Kentucky who was a private and Sergeant in the company commanded by Captain Byer in North Carolina. 16 months as a private 3 months as a Sergeant Inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky at the rate of 68 dollars 33cents per annum. To commence on the 4th day of March, 1831 Certificate of pension issued the 27 day of March, 1833 and Seal to Charles F. Wing, Greenville, Kentucky. Arrears to the 4th of March, 1831 $136.6 Semi-anl. allowance ending September $ 34. ------- $170.82 Revolutionary Claim Act June 7, 1832 Recorded by Daniel Boyd, Clerk Book E Vol 7 page 3 New Certificate issued 7 September, 1833 and sent to as above. **************************************************************************** Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832 State of Kentucky County of Muhlenberg On this 30th day of July, 1832 personally appeared in open court of said county, now sitting, John Bone, a resident of the County of Muhlenberg and State aforesaid, aged sixty nine years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832. that he entered the service of the United States the last of June, 1780 and served against the Tories on the forks Yadkin, State of North Carolina, but does not recollect the time he was engaged and served this tour. From Gates defeat to some time in May, 1781, he served in the North Carolina militia for several tours of three months each. The first tour was under the following officers, to wit: James Byers, Captain; Gilli Nail(?), Lieutenant; Robert Martin, Ensign; John Silliman(?), Junr. Sergeant; William Loughery, Sergeant. He served the second three months in the North Carolina militia under Saml Reed, Captain. John Lucky and himself were Sergeants, names of the other officers of his comapny not recollected. In this tour he was engaged in a skirmish with the Tories at Colstons. Genl. Davidson commanded there and was wounded. and in another skirmish with the British at Cowans ford, Catawba River, Genl. Davidson commanded and was killed. The other three months same service, he was under Captain Graham and Lieutenant John Purviance. The other officers of his company not recollected. In this last service had a skirmish with the British on the Reedy fork of Haw River and afterwards was at the Battle of Guilford where Genl. Greene commanded as Major Genl. Colonels Locke and Williams. After the above service he served ten months in North and South Carolina and Georgia under Genl. Sumpter, Wade Hampton, Colonel; Wm. Alexander, Captain; Danl Carter, first Lieutenant; Forgie Snoddy, Second Lieutenant and was in several skirmishes. One at Dorchester and another at M. Cards ferry on Congaree. He states that he fully completed his several terms of service and was regularly discharged, but that he has lost his discharges and has no documentary evidence of his service whatever and that he knows no living person now living whose testimony he can procure, who can testify as to his service. that he was a volunteer from Rowan County, North Carolina. He states that he was born in York County, Pennsylvania on the 19th September, 1762. Moved to North Carolina, Rowan County, 1765. remained there until 30 Septr. 1783. and in the year 1785 removed to the western country and settled in East Tennessee, where he continued until the year 1789. When he removed to Madison County, Kentucky and there remained until the year 1810, when he removed to Muhlenberg, his present place of residence. He has a record of his age in the family bible. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of the agency of any State. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. John Bone **************************************************************************** We, Isaac Bard, Clergyman, residing in the County of Muhlenberg and Hugh Bone, residing in the County of Hopkins, both of the State of Kentucky, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with John Bone who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration that we believe him to be sixty nine years of age, that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution and that we concur in that opinion. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. Isaac Bard, Pastor of Greenville and Mt. Zion Hugh Bone **************************************************************************** and the said court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter, and after putting the interrogatories prescribed by the War Department that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary Soldier and served as he states. and the court further certifies that it appears to them that Isaac Bard who has signed the preceding certificate is a Clergyman resident in the town of Greenville, County of Muhlenberg and State of Kentucky and that Hugh Bone, who has also signed the same is a resident in the county of Hopkins and State aforesaid and is a creditable person and that their statement is entitled to credit. and further the Court feels no hesitation in saying from their long acquaintance with the applicant aforesaid and from his general good moral character that his Statements aforesaid are and ought to be relied on. I, Charles F. Wing, Clerk of the Court of the County of Muhlenberg, do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings of the said Court in the matter of the application of John Bone for a pension. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Seal of my said office this 30th day of July, 1832 and in the 41st year of the Commonwealth. Ch. F. Wing
