Bristow Hos. of Representatives Recorded on Roll of pension under ---- July 29, 1848 page 173, Vol. -- ------------------------------------------------------- State of Kentucky Muhlenberg County On this 20th day of April in the year One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty Three, personally appeared --- the Honorable, the County Court, it being a court of record of Muhlenberg County, in open court David Edwards a resident of the County of Muhlenberg and State of Kentucky; aged seventy-five years in May last, who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June the seventh 1832; that he enlisted in the army of the United States in the year 1776 for two years with Thomas Ridley and served in the 3rd regiment of the continental line under the following named officers. To wit: The company was commanded by Captain Thomas Ridley of the 3rd regiment commanded by Col. Lawson; his given name not recollected. That he served out his time and received a discharge in 1778. Whilst in the service he was in the battles of Brandywine, Trenton, Amboy and Monmouth. That after the expiration of his enlistments he returned home and entered the militia service as substitute for his father; David Edwards (Jr.?) for one tour. That he served a tour for his Uncle William Edwards in the Militia and part of a tour for his Brother John Edwards; he being sick. Whilste in the Militia he was commanded by Captain John Taylor. Benjamin Blount commanded the Regiment. The second tour Arthur Baykin Captain. Commander of the Regiment not recollected. At the time Cornwallis surrendered he was under the Command of Captain Thomas Saughn(?). Whilst in the militia he was stationed at Williamsburg for some time and marched from that place to the siege of York. He was in a skirmish at Petersburg, Virginia. He was then under the command of John Taylor. The regiment commanded by Colonel Gaskin. States that he enlisted at South Hampton Court house, Virginia. And resided in said county and entered the service each and every time from South Hampton County, Virginia. That he served out his time each and every tour and received regular discharges which are lost. That he has no documentatary evidence of his service. That he knows of but one witness who can prove his service or any part thereof; which is Captain Thomas McCanthan whose deposition is hereto attached, marked B and made a part hereof. That he removed from South Hampton County, Virginia to Nash County, North Carolina about the year 1793. That in the year 1811, as well as he recollects, he removed from Carolina to Logan County, Kentucky and in 1827 he removed from Logan to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, where he still resides. I hereby relinquish every claim whatever to a pension or an annuity except the present and declares that my name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. David Edward ** Silas Drake Clergyman, residing in Muhlenberg County and Jacob Johnson residing same county, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with David Edwards who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration. That we believe him to be seventy-five years of age, that he is reputed and believed in neighborhood where he resides a Soldier of the Revolution and that we concur in that Opinion. Answer: In May 1758 Have you any record of your age, if so where is it? Answer: I have. It was left in a Bible in Virginia. I am acquainted with Micajah Mills (or Wells?), Wiatt Wells (or Mills?), Albritton Drake are my near neighbors at present and who can testify as to my veracity and their beliefs as to my being a Soldier of the Revolution. Signed D**** Edwards --------------------------------------------------------------- Certificate #1127 Ailcey, alias Alice Edwards Widow of David - Kentucky July 28?, 1848 Husband died July 11, 1839 State of Kentucky Muhlenberg County On this 5th day of April 1852 Before me, R. D. Reynolds, an acting Justice of the Peace within and for the county and State aforesaid, personally appeared Mrs. Alce Edwards, aged seventy-two years, a resident of the county and State aforesaid, who, after being first duly sworn according to law, on her oath doth make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the acts of Congress passed 7th July 1838, 3d March 1843, 17th June 1844 and 2d February 1848, to Wit: that she is the widow of David Edwards who, as she believes, was a soldier in the army of the Revolution, and served some length of time. That he belonged to the Virginia line troops, and to the records and army registers of said State she refers for the evidence to support the service performed by her said husband. That her said husband, David Edwards, deceased, received a pension for some time previous to his death; amounting to $80 dollars per annum. That she was married to her said husband about the year 1797 in the State of North Carolina and County of Nash by one Denton Mann, a Justice of the Peace. That she has heretofore made application for a pension, and to the evidence on file she refers in support of her declaration as to her marriage, or any other facts necessary in the adjudication of her claim. That her said husband died in the State and county aforesaid, on the 11th day of July 1839. That her name before her marriage to the said David Edwards was Alce Johnson. That she is still a widow. She now prays that an examination of her claim may be had at the Pension Office at Washington City, and that an allowance may be made, which she surely specially requests may be made payable at the United States Agency at Louisville, Kentucky. Alce Edwards - her mark -------------------------------------------------------------- December 5, 1853 In Todd County, Kentucky Thomas Edwards, B. * Johnston and A. * Edwards testified to their belief that David and Alcy were married and always regarded and recognized as husband and wife. And that Ailcy Edwards now residing in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, is greatly impaired in her health and recollection(?) in consi**** of a cancer on face. She is very old and infirm. One Thousand eight hundred and fifty four personally appeared before me A. M. Shelton, a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and State aforesaid, Thomas Edwards, Sr. after being first duly sworn according to law states upon oath that he was well acquainted with Ailcy Edwards. He states that the said Ailcy Johnston was married to the said David Edwards in October 1793 in Nash County, North Carolina and that he was well acquainted with both of the parties before and after their said marriage, and that they was always recognized as husband and wife up to the death of the said Da*** Edwards. Thomas Edwards -his mark Sworn to before me the day and date above written by Thomas Edwards Sr. and I further state that Thomas Edwards Sr. is entitled to full faith and credit upon oath and I am not in any way interested in the Prosecution of said claim. A. M. Shelton J.P. ------------------------------------------------------------------- State of Kentucky Muhlenberg County On this 28th day of February 1854 personally appeared before me R. D. Reynolds, a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and State aforesaid, Grunny(?) Duvall and made oath in due form of law that she is well acquainted with Ailcy Edwards, the widow of David Edwards. That she has known **** Ailcy Edwards the wife of David for sixty odd years. She was then recognized as the wife of David and is now greatly impaired in health and mind from a cancer on her left cheek. She has resided in this county for the space of thirty years and that previous **** they resided in the State of North Carolina and they have been always regarded as husband and wife and so known. P. ------------------------------------------------------------------- State of Kentucky Muhlenberg County On this 28th day of February 1854 personally appeared before me R. D. Reynolds, a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and State aforesaid, Jordan Bass Sr. and made oath in due form of law that he is personally acquainted with Ailcy Edwards, the widow of David Edwards, that he was present and saw them married. They was married in Nash County, State of North Carolina in the year 1793 and her name before her said marriage was Ailcy Johnson. I wated on David Edwards when the Serimony of Marriage took place. She is very old and her health and mind is greatly impaired from a cancer on her face. My best recollection is that the marriage took place in the fall of 1793. P. ------------------------------------------------------------------ State of Kentucky Muhlenberg County On this 28th day of February 1854 before me R. J. Reynolds a Justice of the Peace in and for the county and State aforesaid personally appeared Julius Hill an Courtney Hill and made oath in due form of law that they are personally acquainted with Ailcy Edwards, widow of David Edwards and have been acquainted with her for the space of eighty years and that the said Ailcy was married to the said David Edwards about the year 1793 in the State of North Carolina and that they have lived together as man and wife and have been always so recognized by all who new them up to his death and was recognized as such in this State and in the State of North Carolina. Julius Hill Courtney Hill Subscribed and sworn to before me by Julius Hill and Courtney Hill the day and date above written and I State that they are entitled to full credit an upon oath. Given under my hand this the 28th day of February 1854. R. D. Reynolds J. P. ------------------------------------------------------------------ On the 28th February 1854, Alden Bass testified that he has known Alcy Edwards upwards of sixty eight years and she and David were recognized as man and wife by all who knew them both in North Carolina and Kentucky. ------------------------------------------------------------------- August 17th 1854 German(?) W. Word, Clerk of Nash County, North Carolina testified that he could find no marriage bond or license for record of a David Edwards in the records of his office. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Department of the Interior - Widows Pension I certify that in conformity with the act of July 29, 1848 Ailcey Edwards, widow of Daniel Edwards who was a private in the Revolutionary war is inscribed on the pension list at the rate of 80 dollars per annum, commencing on the 4th of March 1848, and continuing for life, unless she should again marry, in which case the pension is not payable after the time of such marriage. (the next page says Daniel was a mistake and the name should have been David.) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ch. F. W i n g testified that he has known Alcy Edwards for at least 25 years. That he also knew David and always considered them to be married and they were respectable and orderly citizens. Also states that David Edwards died 11th day of July 1839. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 12th June 1832 In Logan County Captain Thomas McClanahan of Simpson County, Kentucky testified that he served with David Edwards for more than nine months in 1776 and 1777. --------------------------------------------------------------------- State of Kentucky County of Muhlenberg On this 15 day of September A. D. 1853 personally appeared before me R. D. Reynolds a Justice of the Peace within and for the County aforesaid and duly authorized by law to administer oaths, Ailcey Edwards aged seventy six years who being duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in Order to obtain the benefit of the pensions made by the act of Congress of 29 July 1848, or any act under which she may be found entitled, to Wit: That she is the Widow of David Edwards who was a soldier of the Revolutionary war, and who was a pensioner of the United States at the time of his death. She further declares that she was married to the said David Edwards on the (Blank) day of July 1839 in the year 1839; that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service. She further Swears that she is now the widow of said David Edwards; that she is very old and infirm and unable to appear before the county Court or any court of record. Alcy Edwards -her mark -------------------------------------------------------------------- October 31, 1853 Elijah Diches(?), Gideon Edwards and Hugh Edwards testified that David and Ailcey lived together as man and wife and were known as such and respected. ------------------------------------------------------------------
