Inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky at the rate of 20 dollars per annum to commence on the 4th day of March 1831. Certificate of Pension issued the 14 day of March 1833 and sent to C. F. Williams Clerk Book E Vol. 7, page 8 ---------------------------------------------------- Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed 7th June, 1832 State of Kentucky Muhlenberg County On this 28th day of August 1832 personally appeared in open court before Aloncy? McLiam? Judge of the Muhlenburg Circuit court Now sitting, Josua Elkin resident of Muhlenburg County & State of Kentucky, aged seventy years who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. He entered the service under Captain Richard Goulden, Lieutenant Abram Blick(?); he was a horseman. Captain Goulden joined General Marion, and served under them and Maj. Bluford, Maj. Hicks, Colonel Youngblood and also Captain Youngblood; his brother. He served in that campaign three months, and then returned home. In that campaign we fought Colonel Williams, a tory at pelders old field on the road leading from Orangeburgh to Charles town and we marched through South Carolina, only we went from Orangeburgh. We rendevoused to the Uta(?) Springs where we joined Marions army. We went from there to Monles(?) corner and stationed there a while. From thence to the four holes at Riddle Spargers place tation(?) and stationed there a while. From thence to Orangeburgh and there we stationed a while. From thence to the Uta(?) Springs, and then we went home very soon after. He was drafted and entered the service under Captain Lewis Box, Liuetenant Abram Blick, under whom he had served before. We joined Maj. Hicks who belonged to General Greene and commanded a party of three or four hundred men who were engaged in procuring cattle for Greene's army. He served on that tour three months and served under the above officers and were frequently in Greens camps at Charles town. He resided in Winton County, State of South Carolina when he entered the service. Never served with any continental regiments, except so far as related of his service under Green. General Sumpter(?) was sometimes with Marion and commanded us. He has no documentary evidence and knows of no person whose evidence he can procure who can testify to his service. After the tours of service before mentioned, he served under Captain Box upon several expeditions after the tories and we frequently Killed(?) and took them prisoners. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. Josua Elkin -his mark --------------------------------------------------- We, Silas Drake, a clergyman, residing in the county of Muhlenburg and Josiah Bell residing in the same hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Josua Elkin who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration. that we believe him to be seventy years of age; that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where resides to have been a revolution and that we concur in that Opinion. Sworn to and subscribed that day & year aforesaid. Silas Drake Josiah Bell And the said court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter and after puting the interogatories prescribed by the war department, that the above named applicant was a revolutionary soldier and served as he states. And the court further certifies that it appears to them that Silas Drake, who has signed the preceding certificate is a clergyman resident in the county of Muhlenburg and that Josiah Bell who has also signed the same is a resident of the county of Muhlenburg, and is a credible person and that their statement is entitled to credit.
