COX, physician and surgeon, is a native of Taylorsvlle, Spencer Co., Ky., and the eighth of a family of fourteen children born to Shelby and Sarah (Tutt) Cox. Isaac S. Cox, the grandfather of our subject, was a native of Virginia; was born in 1782, and in an early day removed to Kentucky in company with his brothers, Jonathan, James, Gabriel, David and George, and made a settlement in Nelson County, on the creek which still bears the name of the family. These brothers were among the earliest permanent residents of Nelson County, and their descendants are to be found in various parts of the State. Shelby Cox was born in Nelson County in 1812, and was a cabinet-maker by occupation. He was married in 1837 to Miss Sarah A. Tutt, daughter of William Tutt, by whom he had fourteen children, of whom the following are living: Mrs. Kate Martin, Mrs. Emma Groves, Isaac S., Mrs. Anna B. Price, Harvey P., Mrs. Ida Wells, William T., James A. and Sarah T. Mr. Cox served in the United States Arsenal at St Louis during the Mexican war, after which he removed to Taylorsville and was engaged in the milling business. He gave each of his children a collegiate education, and took great interest in religious matters, having been an active member of the Christian Church for many years. He died on the 17th of July, 1873. Harvey P. Cox was born February 29, 1852. He grew to manhood in Spencer County, and began the study of medicine in 1872 with Dr. J. W. Smith, of Taylorsville, under whose instruction he continued one year. He then entered the office of Dr. E. W. King, with whom he remained for a little more than a year, when he entered the medical department of Louisville University, from which he graduated in March, 1876. After graduating he located in the village of Mackville, where he has since resided, practicing his profession in Washington and other counties. He was married December 11, 1877, to Miss Obie Wycoff, by whom he has two children, Ella B. and Emma M. Cox. Dr. Cox is a member of the Masonic fraternity, I.O.O.F., and in politics votes with the Democratic party. He is an active member of the Christian Church, as is also his wife, and belongs to the Mackville congregation.
