GARDINER was born June 17, 1823, in the house where he now resides. His father, Theodore Gardiner, a native of St. Mary's County, Md., removed with his parents to Nelson County, Ky., in 1788, where he died in 1850, at the age of sixty-two years. He was the son of Clement Gardiner, of Maryland; a devout Catholic, who brought eighty slaves to Kentucky, where he died in 1820, aged seventy years. He was a direct descendant of Richard Gardiner, who landed with the first company on Plymouth Rock. Theodore espoused Elizaeth, daughter of Capt. James Rapier, Nelson County (died in 1848, aged sixty-two years), and their union was blessed by the birth of Matilda (O'Bryant); Christina (Heady); Louisa (Walker); William H.; Rosella (Adams); Joseph E.; Eliza A. (deceased), and Nancy Mills. On February 14, 1855, Joseph E. Gardiner, born in Nelson County, was united in marriage with Martha, daughter of Clem N. And Plagia (Leak) Buckman, of Union County (born August 23, 1833), and to them have been born Clement R.; Ida L. (Head); William G.; Arabella; Plagia and Elizabeth (twins, both deceased); Joseph R., John I. (deceased); Francis B.; Mattie B. And Harry T. Joseph E., Sr., served as deputy sheriff and constable for twelve years, and acted as magistrate and member of the court of claims of Nelson County from 1855 to 1882. He was at one time colonel of the State militia. He is a farmer, having 340 aces of productive land in a good state of cultivation. He has ever been a zealous Catholic; in politics is a Democrat, but opposed secession in the lates [sic] struggle, through which he lost eight slaves.
