Son of Hon. John L. and Lucinda B. (Hardin) Helm. Born October 31, 1833, at Bardstown, KY. Was prepared for college by Robert Hewitt in Elizabethtown--his legal residence while a student. In 1847 he entered Centre College. On leaving he chose the law as a profession, and pursued it at Louisville and at the Law School in Cambridge, MA. He practiced for a time in Elizabethtown, and then moved to Memphis, TN. Died January 27, 1858, at Memphis, of typhoid fever. He never married. "He was a constant and deep student, both of books and human nature, and had acquired a vast fund of information, historical, scientific and political. As a speaker he was easy and attractive, close and logical in argument, happy in his illustrations and forcible in his conclusions."
