State of Kentucky County of Ohio On this third day of November 1834 personally appeared in open court before the court of Ohio County now sitting John Maddox a resident in the County of Ohio, State of Kentucky, aged 71 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 18342. That he entered the service of the United States and served as herein stated: That he volunteered and joined a company commanded by Gideon Hacker in Goochland County Virginia (where this declarant was born and raised) and rendezvoused at Albermarle Barracks where we were employed in guarding the British prisoners where I remained a term of three months, the time I volunteered for. This was as well as I recollect in the Fall of the year 1777 or 1778 when after I had served the tour I was discharged and returned home. That in the Spring of the following year I joined a company raised by Captain Gideon Hacker for another tour of three months rendezvoused at Richmond, Virginia and marched down James River passed through several villages to Cabin Point first on one side and then on the other side of said James River. I recollect the names Major McGill and Colonel Campbell of the regular army, when I served the full term of three months was discharged and returned home. That in the Fall of the same year I joined a company raised and commanded by Captain Thomas Hacker of the said County of Goochland for a three monthÕs tour when we marched to and roundezvoused Richmond and were employed in guarding said James River. I recollect no officers except Colonel Nathaniel Morriss of the Army, when after serving the full time I was discharged and returned home. That in the Spring of the following year I joined a company raised in said County of Goochland and commanded by Captain Humphrey Parish and marched again to Richmond and served as before stated in guarding the river sometimes on one side and sometimes on the other, under Colonel John Pleasant and served a tour of three months was discharged and returned home. That in the summer of the same year he joined a volunteer company commanded by Gideon Hacker, Captain, and marched and served three months guarding the James River against the British and Tories. That in the Fall of the same year he joined a company of militia raised by Captain Elisha Leek and marched to Richmond and served three months in guarding James River and served under General Wedding. That in the following Fall he joined another company commanded by Thomas Miller, Captain, Colonel Taylor and marched down James River joined the main army at Richmond commanded by LaFayette until joined by General Washington, when he took the command in this expedition we marched to within fifteen miles of Little York and crossed the river to Gloucester to prevent the escape of the British in that direction, where he remained to the end of the time for which he volunteered. This declarant states that he served longer than herein stated but cannot recollect under whom he served but does distinctly recollect the periods stated above. That he knows of but one person living by whom he can prove his service and that is David Sanders of Logan County, Kentucky whose deposition he obtained on the 4th day of October 1834 which proves his services for twelve months. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State. John Maddox And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter and after putting the interrogations prescribed by the War Department that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he states.
