One that covered over 100 pages based on the Grooms. This list was Folded into this file. The second list was based on the Wife name, crossed checked it but found no new names in it. The third list covered file “F” found many new names here and they were folded into this file. (6) Marriages preformed by the REV. JOSEPH BENNETT, 1876/1908, permission given by LINDA LEWIS to include information from this list. All the names were checked, and if they appeared more than two times, with the same dates, the extra placements were deleted. SIR-NAMES that sounds alike, but spelled many ways; In working with the varies lists over the years, many problems were caused by the sir names being spelled more than one way to help work around this problem this writer has taken the “SAME SOUNDING NAMES” in the first column, gave them a heading showing the varies spelling, then using one spelling placed all the names together. In the second column you will see the name as it was printed in the lists above. It is felt that by grouping the names together it will help in your search of family lines. MARRIGE BONDS ---- CONSENT ---- LICENSE ---- RETURN Found this in the Butler County Webb Site, submitted by ANITA TURNER. BOND: This was a promise that the bride and groom were each legally free to marry. Many times the groom signed his own bond, but a kinsman of the bride or someone who knew her well, signed for her as her bondsman. CONSENT: This was filed with the bond only if either of the parties were underage and required a parents permission to marry. LICENSE: This was issued when the two previous documents were approved. Both parties had to be present to obtain the License, if they were present when the Bond and Consent were filed. The license could be issued on the spot. At which point they were free to be married. RETURN: This was done by the person who performed the marriage and it was the only official record that the marriage took place. However this is also where lots of mistakes took place. If the minister only came to the court house a few times a year, that’s when he made the returns. If he kept a good notebook and had faithfully written down all the information correctly that’s how he recorded it. But if he didn’t keep written records or lost them it depended on his memory, thus he may have entered incorrect information. It is noted that there are a number of couples are listed two times, same names but maybe with different volumes and or pages. Since this writer had no idea what the reason for this would be, so I posted the question on the OHIO COUNTY QUARY page. SHIRLEY WATSON SMITH, of Ohio County was good enough to do some digging and came up with the answer. It seems that one listing was when the marriage bond was taken out the other was the listing turned in by the Minister. MARRIGE DATES: With reference to the MARRIAGE BONDS section above, it is noted that this writer noted while moving from one file to another often the dates moved while for the most part the move was just a matter of a few days in some the move was a full year. If the date moved only a few days, this writer did not change the dates that were the first date put into this file. If the date moved a year or more, this was noted by a new entry into the file. It is now the view of this writer that for the most part, we have no real idea of when these people were married, for it appears that the recorded dates seem to be the dates that the RETURNS were made and recorded into the record books. But since this is the only record we now have to work with it must do. The good part is that at least with this list you are in the correct ball park as far as dates go, and also you know who married who. V. C. (JOE) TAYLOR
