Owsley County, Kentucky: Brown Edwards Submitted to the KyGenWeb by: Glenda Flaugher 1 July 2001 joyfull200@hotmail.com *************************************************************************** Brown Edwards (b. 2-14-1913 Proctor KY d. 5-2-1981 Cincinnati, Hamilton Cty KY...s/o Fred Edwards and Eva Rowland?...married: Nettie Mae 'Combs' Brown was born on Feb. 14, 1913 at Proctor, Kentucky. Proctor is in Lee County, Kentucky. It is now a residential suburb with a post office just below the forks of the Kentucky River and is across the river from Beattyville. The area may have been settled in the very early 19th century by pioneer and Indian fighter Archibald D. McGuire and named for Rev. Joseph Proctor (1754-1844), a North Carolina-born Indian fighter turned Methodist minister and one of the first permanent settlers of Estill County, Kentucky. The Proctor post office was established on April 4, 1843, with Nathan Jacobs, postmaster, and discontinued in 1918. His father, Frederick Edwards did not merry his mother, Eva Rowland. Eva raised Brown until she died in 1916. (On Browns Social Security application he listed his father as: Fred Edwards...and his mother as: Evie Freeman??????) At this time his grandmother, Vashiti Cornett, took care of him and raised him to adulthood. His grandmother and her family lived across the road from Kathryn Combs (the mother of Nettie Mae Combs). This is how Brown and Nettie met. After Netties husband died in 1937 she bought a farm in Congleton, Kentucky and moved from Hardburley back to Owsley County. Brown and Nettie met again and were married in 1939. Brown worked on the farm for a while and also was a coal miner at Hardburley, Kentucky until they moved to Ohio. In about 1952 they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio with Imogene and Buster Sizemore. Brown worked at Sears, Roebuck & Co. on Reading Road for many years. He retired from there. Him and Nettie at this time still owned the home place of Kathryn Combs. They remodeled the house and spent many wonderful days there until Brown got sick. Brown loved his family as much as he loved life. He may not have been my grandfather by blood, but he was my true grandfather, and I loved him dearly. Brown passed away on May 2, 1981 of lung cancer. He is buried at Goshen Cemetery on Linton Road in Goshen, Clermont County, Ohio. He is greatly missed.
