Owsley County, Kentucky: Roscoe Helton Jr. Biography Contributed to the KyGenWeb by: Glenda Flaugher 10 June 2001 joyfull200@hotmail.com **************************************************************************** Roscoe Helton, Sr. is the s/o Rev Wm Arnold Helton and Elvira Mario 'Bryant' Roscoe was born in Ricetown, Owsley County, Kentucky. Ricetown in at the mouth of Stringtown Branch of Indian Creek, 5 1/2 miles southeast of Booneville, Kentucky. It was established as Floyd on September 13, 1901. It was named by Joseph Baker, its first postmaster, for his son. In 1905 Harvey Rice, the local storekeeper, renamed the office Ricetown for himself and had his wife Mary appointed postmaster. The community served by this post office is now locally called Indian Creek for the stream, which flows into the South Fork of the Kentucky River some 5 miles northwest of the town. Roscoe is listed in the 1910 census as being 10 years old. Roscoe married Florence Bolin-Bowling at the house of his cousin [Joseph Helton]. Roscoe and Florence were only married about one month and then got a divorce. In about 1922 Roscoe married Nettie Mae Combs. Roscoe was killed in a mining accident on November 26, 1937. He was killed while working at the Hardy Burlingham Mining Co. at Hardburly, Ky. His neck was broken when a piece of slate fell on him. Three other employees were covered by the same fall but escaped with minor injuries. Frank Fugate was the Clergyman at Roscoe's Funeral.
