Directions include going about 15 miles from Booneville to top of cemetery at head of Buffalo Creek. Pass Indian Creek on the way. Off Rt. #28 to junction 2024 and take a right. Follow it till blacktop stops..if going in very dry weather one can travel on a unpaved road used by coal trucks. At the crest of the hilll bear right. There is a large lake with a water fall beside the cemetery. In the early 1980's Louise Rice & others took tools and chain saws and cleaned this cemetery out. It was supposed to be named for a missionary lady named Cort who camed to Owsley and opened a school near the cemetery and remained there 14 years. There are between 400 - 500 graves. Many are old fieldstones, handcut and the inscriptions have worn away. The old home of Robert "Julius Bob" was in this area. This cemetery is still receiving burials. The oldest stone now readable is that of A. Baker b Oct d 6 Dec 1851 Many of the old stones have Masonic Emblems. Both the remnants of the old stones of "Julius Bob" & his son John Hammonds "Mucker John" Baker have these. I have 3 transcripts of this cemetery. • Made on 12 Apr 1976 by June Runyon Ayres/ 4498-A Gaffey Heights\Fort Knox, Ky. She only copied 43 graves. • Made 5 Dec 1980 by Bertha Noble, Granville Noble, Virgil Herald & Edna Herald. They state they found 207 marked graves + 82 graves they couldn't identify.. or total of 289 graves. However I have only the first three pages which list 56 marked graves & 11 unmarked graves. I hope to locate the rest of their work. • Made 16 July 1983 by Jackie T. Burton & her husband Larry W. Burton They copied 203 graves. This list was made by combining these three transcripts. NOTE: several times you will see duplicate dates but with some difference..this was done when the dates from these lists did not exactly match. Also note that the Burton list stops with Belle Baker w/o of Charlie Baker. The graves after Belle were on the partial lists of Noble & Runyon and must not have been located by Burton. Finding the rest of the Noble list would probably locate an additional number of graves. ********************************************************************************** ********************************** USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material.
