I have left the spelling and puncuation as is in the original documents. On June 14, 1883, Willis recieved a pension. On Aug. 6, 1894 Martha received a widow's pension. Willis died of a pistol shot on April 5, 1894 at Buffalo Creek, Kentucky. {Possibly suicide because he was nearly blind and deaf ?} **************************************************************************** (FIRST DOCUMENT) Washington, Sept 27, 1883 Respectfully returned to the Commission of Pensions. Cavy Volunteers, was enrolled on the 10th day of Oct. 1862 at Breathitt Co. for one year and is reported on the rolls of the Co. to Aug 31, 63 presant.(Rolls from Aug. 31 ,63 to Feby 29, 64 not on file) Mustared out with company Mar 24, 64 at Camp Nelson Ky. Rets from Aug 31, 63 to Jany 31, 64 do not report him absent Feby 64 not on file. No evidence of alleged disabilities, Books of organization, except Co. K clothing book not on file. (SECOND DOCUMENT) Department of the Interrior, June 27, 1883 GERNRAL U.S.A. a report of services and disability in the case #485641 of Willis Sandlin, late a privt in Co. I 14, Ky. Cav. Disabled by Measles,resulting in impairment of sight and defness in both ears, contracted at Irvine, Ky. Feb. 15, 1862. Discharged Mar. 24, 1864. A full military history is requested in the case. ? ? I 14 Ky. Cavalry on this 10 day of November 1888, personally appeared before me a Deputy Clerk in and for the aforsaid county, duly authorized to administer oaths William Riley aged 51 years, a resident of Gabbard, in the county of Owsley and state of Kentucky whose post office address is Gabbard, Owsley County, Ky. Well known to me to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declare in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: That they have been well and personally aquainted with Willis Sandlin for 30 years and that at the time of his enlistment in the service he was a stout hearty man and free from any disease of eyes or ears and since his discharge he has bin suffering with a disease of eyes abd ears he has been partly blind so that he couldnot see any distance and he has bin hard of hearing and complaining of a roaring in his head. Eversince his discharge and return home from the service we have worked togather and for each other off and on at farming labor he hant bin able to make moore than a half a hand since discharge at no time. We have lived near neighbors to him and saw him(?)an(?)once each week since discharge and at all times found him suffering from the affects of disease of eyes and ears. We know theese facts from personal knowledge as have stated. Gabbard an true and lawful agent to prosecute the same. Now this agreement witnesseth that for and in consideration of services done and to be done in the (?) hereby agree to allow my agent W.B. Gabbard of Eversole Kentucky the fee of $25 Twenty Five Dollers which shall include all amounts to be paid for any services in the furtherance of said claim and said fee shal not be demanded by nor payable to my said agent in whole or in part except in the case of the granting of my pension and the same shall be paid to him in accordance with the previous of sections 4768, 4769 of the revised statute of the United States. Gabbard And now to wit this 14th day of Nov 1888, I accept the provissions contained in the foregoing article of agreement and will to the best of my ability endeavor faithfully to represent the intrist of the claiment in the primies I hereby certify that I have recieved from the claimant above named the sum nothing and nothing for postage and other expenses and that these agreements have executed in (?)with out additional cost to the claimant as required by law in excess of the feeabove named said agent making no charge there for witness my hand the date and year above written. Gabbard (SIXTH DOCUMENT) Statement Of: Willis Sandlin State of Kentucky County of Owsley On the 6th day of September A.D. one thousand and ninety before me an officer duly authorized to administer oaths for general purposes within and for the county and state aforesaid, personally appeared Willis Sandlin aged 45 years, a resident of the county of Owsley, state of Ky., who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical person who was ENROLLED on the 10 day of Oct, 1862 in Co. I 14 Reg't Ky Cav Vols, in the war of the rebellion, and served at least ninety days, and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Camp Nelson Ky, on the 24 day of Mar 1864. That he is unable to earn a support by manual labor, by reason of Disease of eyes and deafness result of measles-general debility. That said disabilities are not due to his vicious habits, and are to the best of his knowledge and belief permanent. That he has applied for pension under application No. 485641. That he is not a pensioner. That he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the act of June 27, 1890. He hereby appoints C.D. PENNEBAKER, of Washington, D.C. his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim, and he hereby promises and agrees to pay his said attorney the sum of TEN (10)dollars for his services which sum he authorizes and requests the Commissinoer of Pensions to pay out of the pension which may be granted him under this application. Baker aged 41 years a resident of the county of Owsley the state of Kentucky whose post office address is Doorway and John Abner aged 49 years a resident in the county of Owsley and the state of Kentucky whose address is Doorway, well known to me to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declare in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: that they have been well and personally aquainted with Willis Sandlin for 30 years and that while in the srvice and line of duty at Irvine in the state of Kentucky on or near February 1863 contracted measile and taken relapse and settled in his eyes and ears and rendered him unfit nearly all the time for duty untill he was discharged. We know these facts by being presant with the command an eye witness as a have stated. Persons whome I certify is respectable and entitled to credit and who being by me duly sworn state that Martha Sandlin and Willis Sandlin had never been previously married and the applicant has not remarried since her husbands death and that her children are still living at this time and the claimant was never divorced from her husband and that they have no interest in this claim and the affidavid was written in there presants and from there own statement and that they was not aided nor prompted by any written statement or recital or from anyones dictations but the facts was personally known to them ans writ down at there request. This is to license and permit you to join in marriage agreeably to the usual forms and customs of the society to which you belong, Willis Sandlin and Martha Ann Peters of this county aforesaid; Said Willis Sandlin executed bond according to law and the said Martha Ann Peters being an infant, the consent, given under my hand this 29th day of September 1865 and in the year of the Commonwealth. Rice in her presants and by her request and from her personal knowledge and she was not aded nor prompted by by no one dictation nor mumorain and that she has no interest in this claim and is not concerned in the prasecution. her John B. Sandlin was born February the 1st 1886 that she knows theese facts by being presant in the capacity of female attendant and she recalls the date by the birth of one of her children and said affidavid was written by W.E.
