Levi Combs - Perry COunty, Kentucky Obituary A GOOD MAN HAS GONE AWAY By Lee Daniel And today we hang our head in grief and sorrow for our boyhood and life-long friend, Levi Couch, of Hazard, Blue Grass Hollow. On last Saturday at his home God touched his tired body and he was carried away on Angel wings to that beautiful home far away, leaving behind him seven sons and three daughters, and two brothers, Noah and Robin Couch to grieve his passing. For him the sands of time had begun to crown his feet as the decline of age, and in the language of our Brother as he drew near the shore: "I linger but a short while on the banks of the stormy Jordan and cast a wishful eye to Canna's fair and happy land, where my many mansions lie." He was the son of Eli and Polly Combs Couch, born to them four boys, Baylis, Levi, Noah, and Robin. And five girls, Sallyann, Nancyann, Susan, Margaret and Loucinda. Sallyann, the mother of Pole Fields of Hazard, Nancyann, the mother of Mrs. Matt Horn of Hazard. No death has been more universally lamented in the entire community than that of this blessed old timer; his excellent moral character, his uniform gentlemanly bearing, his quiet and unobstrusive manner, won for him the love, respect and esteem of all classes. Levi was one of the most confiding and unsuspicious men I ever knew. His confidence in his fellow-man was almost unbounded. This was the natural outcroppings of his meek and honest heart. He judged others motives by his own, and his being pure gave him strong faith in all men. Our friend and neighbor, Levi Couch is no more on this earth, may we be as well prepared to die, and as willing to bid adieu to this world and all that is dear to us as he was. Levi still lives. They do not die here who live well, in the generations yet unborn the influence of his Christian piety will be felt and recognized; he lived well and those whom he impressed with his life will live it over again. Levi and this writer grew up together between Wabaco and Lots Creek bridge. We worked in the corn and fodder field, log woods and on fleets of timber from Hazard to Frankfort market. We were more like brothers as if no akin, we loved each other, and since those happy days 80 years ago, our joys and sorrows, sunshine and clouds, tears and smiles, and now we must say goodbye. This writer, if God's will--will be 86 next April. Levi was two years older than I. Dewey Daniel has a picture of a group in Hazard guarding the jail when Levi and I were young men, and we are included in this picture. So-long, Levi. We have no fear but you are now in Father Abraham's bosom, waiting and watching for your loved ones you left behind on this earth to meet you in that City paved with gold, and there to walk arm in arm on the golden streets and be with Jesus for evermore. Good-bye Levi, Good-bye; we love you. Levi died 12/13/1955 at Hazard, KY and was buried there.
