WILL OF MICHAEL ROARK The will of Michael Roark was written Aug., 1834, probated Feb. 2, 1839 as follows: My son James . . . My daughter Sally COMBS who intermarried with Elijah COMBS . . . Son Michael . . . Daughter Rebecca TUNNEL who intermarried with William TUNNEL . . . Daughter Betsey SELF who intermarried with Thomas SELF . . . Daughter Salley REYNOLDS who intermarried with George REYNOLDS . . . Daughter Julia KIRKPATRICK who intermarried with John KIRKPATRICK . . . Daughter Polly MORRISETT who intermarried with George MORRISETT . . . Grandson James ROARK, the son of John ROARK, my son. Witnessed by D. ALEXANDER and Joseph MOONEY. Of course you've guessed by now that the Elijah Combs mentioned is the same one that was the founder of Hazard, KY. and my ancestor. The Michael Roark mentioned in the family served in the American Revolution as a Spy for the Militia and is on the roster of the Grayson Co., VA Roster. Elijah Combs, SR was known as "General Lige" in the Perry Co., KY Militia. General "Lige" Combs and his wife, Sarah Roark Combs. donated the land for the City of Hazard, KY. "Lige" served as County Judge and almost every other office in Perry County. He also served in the State Legislature of Kentucky. Some of "Lige's" relatives said he was an awesome sight when he appeared in full regimental dress to muster the "Cornstalk Militia" (this was the name given to the troops). General "Lige" and Sarah are buried behind the present Perry Co., KY Courthouse. They did not get the praise that they deserve for starting the community on the way to civilization. They do deserve some recognition for donating the land to the city. and many years of community service. Recently, the Perry Co. DAR erected a plaque in honor of both Elijah and Sarah Roark COMBS for donating the land for the city. One of "Lige's" sons was killed in the famous "French-Eversole" Feud. But again, that's another story.
