Description: Between five feet one inch and five feet four, 125 to 132 pounds, black eyes, black hair, fair complexion. Medical condition: Had a bad back which caused him to hunch over somewhat. He said this was caused when he was thrown by a horse when he was 13-14 years old. It seems his condition worsened due to his service in the war. He was at first refused enrollment, but later accepted due to the need for volunteers. He received $12 monthly pension beginning in 1890; $20 beginning in 1907; and $30 beginning in 1912. Enrolled in U.S. Army: Dec. 16, 1862 at Peach Orchard (Louisa, Lawrence Co. KY and Five Mile School also mentioned). Honorably Discharged: Sept. 15, 1865 in Louisville, KY.  Interesting information found in pension file applications, affidavits, and depositions:  1. He said he was forced into Rebel service by Colonel Menifee at the point of a pistol and served from Aug. 1 to Nov. 1, 1862. He said he never signed the roster or pledged allegiance to the Confederacy. Others with him at this time were Andrew Moore and James Artrip. (Note: Andrew was probably his brother in law. His wife Nancy had a brother named Andrew).  2. He said he was involved in the pursuit of Morgan in spring, 1864. Others who filed affidavits who were with him were Lindsey Powers, Joseph Hibbitts, and Harmon Mullins. He said exposure to the cold caused him and others much hardship during this time. 3. He said on a forced march in June, 1865, his back and right hip caused him so much trouble he was excused from duty by Surgeon Draper until his discharge in September, 1865. 4. He worked in farming most of his life. Near the end of his life, he worked making chairs. He could write.  Submitted by Tony Belcher, son of Hazel Nadine Cool, daughter of Irvin Cool, son of Jasper Cool, son of James Cool. email: tonylinda@irvineonline.net Additional Comments: Source: This information was condensed from the full pension file of James Cool.
