He was born in Coleman, Jan. 21, 1922, a son of the late Wade and Gustava Dotson Coleman. He was a retired coal miner and a World War II veteran, having fought in seven major battles in Europe. He was a gunner in the 712th tank Battalion and was known by his comrades as “Dead Eye Coleman.” He was of the Jesus Name faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Katherine “Kat” Coleman; two daughters, Patty Ann Coleman and Tammie Elaine Jones; two brothers, Frankie Coleman and Wayne Coleman; and three sisters, Susie Coleman, Ella Coleman and Lizzie Dotson. He is survived by three sons, Douglas Coleman of Groveport, Ohio, Jimmy Darrell Coleman of Phelps and Stevie Keith Coleman of McCarr; three daughters, Carol Sue Guffy of Hendersonville, N.C., Sandra Kaye Legg of Columbus and Susie Gibson of Canal Winchester, Ohio; two brothers, Leo Coleman and Freddie Coleman, both of Phelps; three sisters, Laura “Polly” Dotson of Phelps, Mary Hatfield of McCarr and Ruby Estep of Virginia; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, in the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Raven Fields officiating. Burial will follow in the Billy Dotson Cemetery, Phelps. Arrangements are under direction of R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps. Visitation is after 6 p.m. Tuesday with services Wednesday night at 7. Graveside military services will be conducted by DAV Chapter 141, Belfry.
