Bertha was born in Pike County on February 10, 1912 the daughter of the late Thomas Turner Layne and Rebecca (Ratliff) Layne. She was also preceded in death by her husbands Shade Smith and Ras Smith; one son Charles Smith; five sisters, Virgie Ray, Myrtle McCoy, Pearl Conley, June Willis and Vernie Layne. Bertha was a member of Pilgrim Home, Brushy Creek, Old Regular Baptist Church and a homemaker. For the last twenty two years she had been making her home with her daughter Deanna and son-in-law Clell Haynes in Trenton, Michigan. Left to mourn her passing are her two daughters, Lillian Freeman of Westland, Michigan, Deanna (Mrs. Clell) Haynes of Trenton, Michigan; one sister Pat Layne of California; six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
