He was born in Pike County, Oct. 7, 1933, a son of the late William and Sarah Slone Lowe. He was a retired self-employed contractor and a member and deacon of the Narrows Branch Old Regular Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Janice Mullins Lowe; two sons, Billy Lowe and Michael Lee Lowe, both of Turkey Creek; one daughter, JoAnn (Mrs. Rick) Reed of Johns Creek; one brother, Jessie Lowe of Turkey Creek; two sisters, Emogene Webb of Turkey Creek and Josephine Runyon of Slaters Branch; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, in the Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Bobby Scott, Greg Scott and Lacy Walters officiating. This next obit has a photograph - Leon Gibson Leon Gibson, 77, of Lexington, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998. He was born in Pike County, Nov. 30, 1921, a son of the late Howard and Martha Holland Gibson of Poor Bottom. He graduated from the 37th Infantry Training Battalion at Camp Croft, S.C., and served overseas in the African, Middle Eastern and European theater of operations during World War II. His division saw combat in Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, the Po Valley and the Appennine Mountains. While serving in the 123rd armored division of the 1st Armored Battalion as a tank commander, he obtained the rank of technical sergeant. He was a decorated veteran, receiving five Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Award, the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged June 23, 1945. In 1995 he received a certificate of appreciation as a distinguished Kentucky World War II veteran from then-Gov. Brereton Jones. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 8 in Lexington. He was employed with Caudill Ward Mining Company in Elkhorn City for about 25 years. He was active with the United Mine Workers of America, serving as an officer in Local Union 59-61 of District 30 for more than 18 years, 15 of which he served as administrator of the Federal Burial Fund. He was also a certified mine foreman. He was instrumental in organizing an annual Christmas drive each year for the children's orphanage in Grundy, Va. After retiring from the mines, he and his wife bought and managed several restaurants and then retired for a second time in 1983. He was a member of the Marrowbone Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher for several years. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Trusty Gibson of Lexington; one son, Vance Gibson of Robinson Creek; one daughter, Jean Evelyn (Mrs. Gordon) Sanders of East Lansing, Mich.; one brother, Victor Gibson of Wolfpit; one sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Frank) Johnson of Poor Bottom; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Randall "Tootie" Lawson, 67, of Toler Creek, Harold, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at his home. He was born in Pike County, June 19, 1931, a son of the late Henry and Hattie Roberts Lawson. He was a retired truck driver and farmer and a member of the Toler Creek Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Loene Hatcher Lawson; two sons, Robert "Bobby" Lawson and Johnny Lawson, both of Harold; two daughters, Charlene Carrell of Dana and Debbie Rogers of Harold; one brother, Ralph Lawson of Harold; and four grandchildren. He was born in Shelby County, Aug. 27, 1915, a son of the late Lon and Mary Helms. He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Eastern Coal, a member of United Mine Workers of America, a World War II Army Air Force veteran, and a member of the Pinsonfork Church of God. He is survived by his wife, Mildred V.
