She was born in Pike County, March 31, 1915, a daughter of the late King and Nancy Elizabeth Adkins. She was a homemaker and a member of the Greasy Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Childers; one son, Bradley Childers; and one daughter, Hazel Justice. She is survived by five daughters, Betty Harris of Greasy Creek, Dorothy Parsons of Rocky Road, Margie Thompson of Florida, Irene Wirsing of Indiana, Joan Justice of Sutton; 24 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Greasy Creek Old Regular Baptist Church, with Marvin Bryant, Clayman Adkins, and Curt Carrol officiating. Compton, 85, of Pikeville, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital. He was born at Island Creek, March 18, 1913, a son of the late Elbert and Jennie Winfro Compton. He was a retired coal miner, formerly employed as a wireman by Island Creek Coal, and a member of the Little Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Jessie Damron Compton; five sons, Ronnie Lee Compton of Wyandotte, Mich., John Gary Compton of Pickney, Mich., Floyd Compton of Sookeys Creek, Otis Compton Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Billy Compton of Banner; three daughters, Jettie Jean Tackett of Amanda, Ohio, Roxie Green of Columbus, Virginia Bryant of Pemberville, Ohio; two brothers, Denver Compton of Weeksbury, Elbert Compton Jr. of Michigan; one sister, Lizzie Freeman of Michigan; 17 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Little Creek Old Regular Baptist Church, with Little Creek Old Regular Baptist Church ministers officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Vergil Gray Curry, 90, of Varney, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Lexington Country Place. He was born at Brushy, Feb. 2, 1908, a son of the late John L. and Francis Rebecca Davis Curry. He was a retired school teacher, a member of Meta Baptist Church, Brushy Missionary, National Rifle Association, Thomas Cecil Lodge #375 F&AM, and Teacher's Retirement System. He is survived by his wife, Jettie Curry; two daughters, Mavis Curry Sparks of Lexington, Edith Newdigate of Maysville; one brother, Fred Curry of Meta; one sister, Grace Curry Scott of Pikeville; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was born at Caney, Nov. 9, 1927, a son of the late Clark and Maggie Thacker Hamilton. He was a retired coal miner. He is survived by his wife, Maude Hill Ray Hamilton; five daughters, Fern Little of Caney Creek, Fay Ann Boggs of Summerfield, Ohio, Fletia Lynn Ray of Rocky Road, Venita "Mousie" Branham of Red Creek, Patty Rose Tackett of Lawrence County; two brothers, Raymond Hamilton of Jonancy, Millard Hamilton of Pikeville; two sisters, Ellie Mullins of Elswick Branch, Jonancy, Nellie Newsome of Booker Fork; 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Foster Herbert Hunter, 84, of Titusville, Fla., died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Mariner Health of Titusville. He was born in Elkhorn City. He was a retired principal for the Dade County School Board, a member of St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Titusville, a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a board member of Florida High School Activity Association, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and a former FBI agent. He is survived by his stepsister, Georgia Dye of Lexington; and several cousins. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church. Arrangements are under direction of North Brevard Funeral Home of Titusville. Victor V. James, 82, of Narrows Branch, Hardy, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital. He was born in Pikeville, Nov. 29, 1915, a son of the late Estil and Mary Fields James. He was a disabled coal miner, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of the McAndrews Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Thacker James; Dolly Justice, Karona "Ked" James, Deset Slone; and three brothers, Nelson James, Wilson James, and Frank James. He is survived by one son, Jackie James of Hardy and his wife, Brenda Williamson James; two sisters, Sofie Elkins of Chattaroy, W.Va., Hollie Morris of Columbus, Ohio; one grandchild, Lisa James (Mrs. Rodney) Moore of Hardy; two great-grandchildren, Jaclyn Moore and Nathan Moore. Granville Little, 78, of Long Fork of Virgie, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital. He was born March 9, 1920, a son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Florida Tackett Little. He was a retired coal miner, a World War II veteran, and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local #5899. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Little; three sons, Johnny Keith Little and Barry Neil Little, both of Virgie, Jeffery Layne Little of Little Creek Road, Pikeville; one daughter, Bette Alyce Dotson of Paw Paw; one brother, Bethel Little of Elkhorn City; and eight grandchildren. Besides her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Shawn Murphy of Harrodsburg, Andre Blackburn of the home; her grandmothers, Irene Pugh of Phyllis, Pie Blackburn of Pikeville; and a special cousin, Brandy Caudill of Sidney. She was born at Hardy, June 4, 1936, a daughter of the late Emzy and Cleo Hatfield. She was a secretary for Coal City Parts and a member of the Hardy Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Pinson. She is survived by one son, James Rockford Pinson of Aurora, Colo.; one daughter, Sherri Lynn Mounts of Hardy; and one brother, James Emsy Hatfield of Hardy. She was born in Pike County, April 17, 1935, a daughter of the late John and Fannie Pearl Smith. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her former husband, James H. Smith of Hickory, N.C.; four daughters, Rhonda Leatherman and Marsha Isenhour, both of Claremont, N.C., Melissa Hatley of Catawba, Cynthia Hall of Connelly Springs, N.C.; one brother, Jimmy Smith of Claremont; two sisters, Goldene Alley and Joyce Whitt, both of Ransom; and four grand-children. Virginia Ruth Todd, 75, of Sandy Hook, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at her home. She was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Jan. 30, 1923, a daughter of the late Leslie Blanton and Lula Eldridge. She was a retired teacher and librarian, formerly employed by the Pike County School System, past president of the Pike County Librarians Association, past president of Wesleyan Missionary Society, and a member of the Wells Creek Enterprise Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Drexel B. Todd; two sons, Leslie Everett "Jody" Todd of Hardy, Drexel B. Todd Jr. of Savannah, Ga.; two daughters, Betty Ruth (Mrs. Dale) Duvall of Sandy Hook, Luana (Mrs. Walter) Rutherford of Huddy; one sister, Mary Evelyn Short of Altavista, Va.; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one stepgranddaughter.
