Dr. Lowell Deloss Hatfield, Ph.D., 59, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Indianapolis, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers. He was a son of the late Robert and Virginia Ratliff Hatfield. He was a retired research fellow for Eli Lilly Research Laboratories, a member of the American Chemical Society; the New York Academy of Science; the American Society of Microbiology; the Chemical Society, London; and Sigma Xi, a scientific research society; and the Second Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Berea College in 1961 and Ohio University in 1966 with a doctorate in chemistry, joined Eli Lilly and Company and retired in 1996 as a research fellow. At Eli Lilly he led efforts to develop processes for the manufacture of several of Lilly's antibiotics, resulting in many patents and publications for which he was well-known in the scientific community. He was active on the lecture circuit, speaking on his works at universities and scientific symposia in the U.S. and abroad. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Grant Hatfield; one son, J. Robert Hatfield of Fort Myers; two daughters, Tiffany Sallee and Carol Wallen, both of Indianapolis; six brothers, Robert Hatfield of Raceland, Don Hatfield of Perryville, Md., Lyle Hatfield and Leslie Hatfield, both of McCarr, Quinton Hatfield of Orange City, Iowa, Bruce Hatfield of Hodgensville; and two grandchildren. She was dedicated to rescuing any hurt creature and was involved in the group HorsePower, which gives physically and mentally challenged children self-confidence through riding lessons. She and her husband, Tom, taught people how to train their dogs, without using force. She also enjoyed taking care of customers for her employer, Slane Marine of High Point. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, in the Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy.
