She was born in Pike County on March 8, 1924, a daughter of Sam Lowe of Columbus, Ohio, and the late Easter Justice Lowe. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and was a World War II Army veteran. Besides her father, she is survived by her husband, William Kenner Bevins; three sons, Jerry M. Bevins of Phyllis, Paul M. Bevins of Hickory, NC, Samuel Joe Bevins of Pikeville; one brother, Eugene Lowe of Mansfield, Ohio; three sisters, Dorothy Mercer of Springfield, Ohio, Mavis Goff of London, Ohio, Edna Goff of Breuard, NC.; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 17, in the Grapevine Primitive Baptist Church with Primitive Baptists ministers officiating and burial following in the Bevins Cemetery at Phyllis. Born Jan. 15, 1900 at Shelbiana, he was a son of Edward Slone. He was a member of the Red Creek Church of Christ and a retired miner. He is survived by his wife, Deset James Slone; a daughter, Ruth Slone Damron of Russell; a brother, Lonnie Huffman of Red Creek; a sister, Eunice Huffman of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Arrangements are under the direction of the Justice Funeral Home of Pikeville. BESSIE BISHOP HUNT (1986) Bessie Bishop Hunt, 93, of Raccoon, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 4, 1986, at home. She was born in Pike County, February 27, 1893, a daughter of the late William and Emma Slone Bishop. She was a homemaker and a member of he Church of Christ at Zebulon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Hunt, who died October 28, 1959, and by one daughter, Mrs. Clara Keene, who died in 1986. She is survived by two sons, Kermit Hunt and Dock Hunt, both of Pikeville; one daughter, Mrs. Juanita Lewis Goff of Raccoon, one stepdaughter, Mrs. Hazel Meade of Feds Creek; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. SARAH HALL COLEMAN Sarah Hall Coleman, 75, of Lower Pompey Creek, died at 5:04 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 1987, at her home. Born April 24, 1911, she was a daughter of the late David and Nancy Tucker Hall. She was a member of the Samaria Regular Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel M. Coleman, a son and a daughter. She is survived by three sons, Robert C. VIRGIL SMITH Virgil Smith, 74, of Pomeroyton and formerly of Red Creek, died at 7:40 p.m. Monday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Born Feb. 4, 1912 in Pike County, he was a son of the late Chris and Carolyn Stone Smith. He was a retired miner. He is survived by four sons, Danny Smith and Bobby Huffman, both of Marine City, Mich., Damon and Virgil Smith, both of Pikeville; a brother, Jack Smith of Tennessee; 15 grandchildren and a great grandchild. HIRAM LEE JUSTICE HUDDY Ky.-Hiram Lee Justice, 52, of Anchorville, Mich., and formerly of Huddy, died at 9:33 a.m. Wednesday, may 27, 1992 at the residence of Mellie James in Homemade Hollow at Huddy. Born July 16, 1940 at Lick Creek, he was a son of Opal Matney Justice of Huddy and the late Van Justice. He was a disabled automobile assembly worker, a member of the United Automobile Workers of America and a U.S. Army veteran with six years service. Survivors: his wife, Shirlene James Justice, Anchorville, Mich., a daughter Shari L. Smith, Anchorville Mich.; brothers Harold Dean Justice of McVeigh, Dennis R. Damron, a retired miner was born in Pike County. He was a son of Robert and Rebecca Damron. He was a Regular Baptist Church minister. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Angeline Damron; five sons, Thomas Damron of Arizona, George Damron, Rt. 2 Ashland, Pete and Dan Damron, both of Yeager; four daughters, Mrs. Martha Bentley of Lamar Co, Mrs. Stella Bentley, Mrs. Oma Honaker and Miss Lillie Damron, all of Yeager. RUTH SLONE (DAMRON) Ruth Slone Damron, 67, of Lexington, formerly of Pike County, died Saturday, December 8, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington. She was born at East Shelbiana, a daughter of Deset James Slone of Lexington and the late John S. Slone. She was a retired teacher, having taught in the Ashland City Schools. Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Richard B. Damron; two daughters, Desetta Ruth Lawson and Rosa Lee Horton, both of Lexington; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, at the Southside Church of Christ. Burial followed in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery at Nicholasville. GEORGE DAMRON George Powell Damron of Millard died Wednesday, June 11, 1986 after a long fight with cancer. He was born September 5, 1917 at Yeager, a son of the late John A. and Nona Coleman Damron. He was a World War II veteran and former owner and operator of Damron T.V. Service at Millard. Survivors include one son, Roy Lee Damron of Elkhorn City; three daughters, Georgia Francis Damron, Betty Carol Illie and Stella Falay Patrick, all of Millard. Born in Pike County, he was a son of Lum and Rachel (Overbee) James. He was a member of the Church of Christ. His wife, Mrs. Mary (Fields) James, died in 1949. Survivors include four sons, Nelson, Wilson, Victor and Frank James, all of McVeigh; five daughters, Miss Corona James and Mrs. Raymond Elkins, both of McVeigh, Mrs. John Slone (Deset) and Mrs. Ervin Justice (Dollie), both of Rt. 2, Pikeville, and Mrs. Victor Morris (Hollie) of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Nelson James of Phyllis, and a half-brother John James of Virginia. JESSE JAMES PEYTON'S CREEK Jesse James, 74, of Peyton's Creek, died July 29 at the Church of God in Pikeville. Born March 11, 1905 in Pike County, he was a son of Nelson and Sarah Adams James. He was a retired miner and a member of the Church of God. He is survived by his wife, Roxie Chaney James; two sons, Troy James and Jeroid James, both of Peyton's Creek; a son, Virgil James, preceded him in death; a daughter Verna Justice of Pikeville; four half-brothers, Ralph James and Clinton James, both of Millard, Rufus James of Shelbiana and Clinard James of Red Creek; two sisters, Lettie Belcher and Lillie Mays, both of Regina; five half-sisters, Rushie Harris of Red Creek, Hattie Sexton and Lisa Church, both of Peyton's Creek, Lizzie McCurry of Powell's Creek, and Tilda Thacker of Beaver; 11 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Justice Funeral Home with Curtis Justice and other officiating. Burial will follow in the Anna E. Young Cemetery at Shelbiana. VIRGIL JAMES ELKHORN CITY, Pike Co., Ky Virgil James, 42, of Elkhorn City, a mine foreman for the Kentland Elkhorn Coal Company at Biggs, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of God on the Pikeville By-Pass Road. James died about 8:30 p.m. Sunday at his home after an apparent heart attack, a funeral home attendant said. He was stricken while working on plumbing under his house, it was reported. The Pike County Emergency & Rescue Squad went to the scene after it was reported that he had been electrocuted. James was born in Pike County. He was a son of Jesse James, of Route Two, Pikeville, and the late Laura Belcher James. He was formerly employed by the Justice Funeral Home and was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 294 of Pikeville. Survivors include his father, his wife, Mrs. Laura James; a son, Bobby Ray James of Lexington VA., three step-sons, Charles H. RONNIE JAMES PIKEVILLE, KY Ronnie James Sr., 26, of Detroit, and formerly of McVeigh, Ky.,drowned while swimming Saturday in a private lake near Mayfield KY., a funeral home attendant said. James, a machinist, was born in Kentucky. He was a son of Wilson James of McVeigh and Mrs. Emma Thacker James of Chicago, ILL. SYLVIA THACKER (JAMES) HARDY, KY Sylvia Thacker James, 68, of Hardy died Tuesday, August 24, 1993,at her home following a sudden illness. DOLLIE JAMES (JUSTICE) Dollie (James) JUSTICE, age 87, passed away Friday, March 31, 1995, at the Elkhorn City Nursing Home. She was born in Pike County on May 12, 1907, to the late Estil and Mary (Fields) James, and was the widow of Ervin Justice. Dollie was a homemaker and a member of the Red Creek Church of Christ. Born in Pike Co., November 6, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Regania Belcher Fields and John Fields. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church. Survivors include her husband, Clarence Abshire; one son, Donald Abshire of Mouthcard; six daughters, Juanita Short and Kathleen Ratliff, both of Belcher, Omega Meade of Winchester, Janice Norman of Elkhorn City, Eloise Thacker of Warren MI., and Beverly Finch of Pikeville; one sister, Hessie Sawyers of Lick Creek; 21 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
