One record in the file is the following letter which provides some genealogical information of this family as follows: July 27, 1934 Mrs. J.H. Letton Valrice Florida Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letters relative to William Nobles, John Jessee and Stephen Smith, soldiers of the Revolutionary War. Revolutionary War data furnished by this office are obtained from claims made to the United States for pension and bounty land based upon military service of soldiers in that war. A careful search of the records fails to show such a claim on file on account of the services of William Nobles as described by you or of John Jessee, all spellings of the surnames searched. The data contained herein are obtained from the papers on file in the Revolutionary War claim for pension W.3049, based upon the military service of Stephen Smith in that war. The date and place of birth of Stephen Smith are not stated and no reference is made to his parents. He enlisted, place not stated, about November or December 1777, and served three years as private in Captain Henry Quarles' Company, Colonels Thomas Marshall's and Elias Edmunds' Virginia Regiments. In 1809 he moved from Louisa County, Virginia, to Pulaski County, Kentucky, and settled on his grant of land of one hundred acres in Pulaski County, Kentucky, which he had received from the State of Virginia, for his military service in the Revolutionary War. There is no claim for pension or bounty land on file made by the soldier to the United States for his military service in the Revolutionary War. He died November 28, 1811 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Soldier married Miss Nancy Burdley or Burnley, her name is shown also as Nance, Nanny, Ann and Anny. She was born in August, about 1769, place not stated. She stated that she was married September 6, 1788 in King William County, Virginia, however, it is shown in a copy from the court records of King William County, Virginia, that the marriage bond was issued September 4, 1787. Soldier's widow, Nancy, was allowed pension on her application executed February 15, 1841 while a resident of Pulaski County, Kentucky. Soldier and Nancy had seven children, the only names stated were: Elizabeth Smith, John Smith, Stephen Smith, the three youngest children, and Thomas Smith. The oldest child, a son, was born August 18, 1790, his name not designated. There are no further family data. This is the history of the only Stephen Smith who served from Virginia that is found on the Revolutionary War records of this office. Very truly yours, A.D.
