PERSONAL NEWS John Meadows is at home for a few days. ? Judge L. W. Bethurum is in Louisville. ? Dr. D. B. Southard spent several days in Louisville. ? Miss Minnie Hiatt is visiting relatives and friends here. ? Mrs. Charles Reynolds is with homefolks for a few days. ? Mrs. Oscar Wallin is visiting her parents, Dr. and Mrs. S. C. Davis. ? Mrs. J. A, Mercer, of Burnside, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. E. B. Brown. ? Miss Kieth Sperry, of Louisville, is the attractive guest of Miss Francis Sparks. ? Miss Jennie Davis will attend commencement exercises at Berea College next week. ? Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Hansel, of Lebanon Junction, are spending a few days with relatives here. ? Miss Monte Martin will leave tomorrow for Berea to visit her sister, Mrs. John Moore. ? Miss Elizabeth Adams has returned from Campbell Hagerman College for summer vacation. ? Mrs. W. E. Begley, of London, spent a portion of last week with her brother, Dr. R. W. Dyche. ? Mr. and Mrs. P. Q. Griffin, of Quail, spent Tuesday until Wednesday with Mrs. Margaret Griffin. ? Mrs. G. M. Ballard is rapidly recovering from the operation, which she underwent in Richmond last week. ? Mr. and Mrs. Geizel, of Crab Orchard, were visiting Mrs. Geizel?s parents, Prof. and Mrs. W. R. Dickerson. ? Miss Allie Lee Houk is here from Jamestown, Ind. visiting her sisters, Mrs. Robert Cox and Miss Mary Houk. ? Mr. and Mrs. John Moore, of Berea, spent Saturday and Sunday with Mrs. Moore?s parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Martin. ? H. Burdette Houk, who has a splendid position with the Belknap Hardware Co. in Louisville, is spending this week with relatives and friends. ? Judge Sambrook, H. L. Delph, J. A. Oliver, Mart Hix, J. W. Baker and John R. Carter all prominent citizens of Livingston were here this week. ? Cashier W. L. Richards broke dirt Wednesday for his new residence on the lot purchased from Willis Adams and which joins Mr. Adams. ? Mr. and Mrs. Will Newcomb, of Galveston, Texas, are here on a visit to relatives. Will, who looks to be enjoying the best of health, is just the same ?Will? as he used to be. ? Sam Cox and wife, who have been residents of our town for the past six years, have moved to Oakley in laurel County. Mr. Cox was a quiet, good citizen and we regret to lose him from our number. ? Atty. and Mrs. John W. Brown, Miss Ida Mae Adams, J. C. Adams, A. B. Furnish, J. A. Landrum, George Owens, Chas. C. Davis, Atty. C. C. Williams and John Robins, of Brodhead, were those who accompanied the remains of Dr. P. Benton to Mt Sterling for burial. LOCAL NEWS The engagement of Miss Tevis Carpenter, of Stanford, to Rev. Homer W. Carpenter, of Lima, Ohio, is announced. ? Our enterprising merchants, Asher & Noe, have made some improvements around their store in the way of an addition and front, with a coat of paint overall. ? The flourishing I. O. O. F. Lodge observed Decoration day by marching to the Maret graveyard and paying tribute to the memory of friends and relatives, with appropriate ceremonies after which they enjoyed a delightful luncheon at their lodge rooms, served by their wives, sisters and sweethearts. The writer, who was a guest, is under many obligations. ? The Wildie and Hiatt baseball team had a very interesting game at Hiatt Saturday. Score was 5 to 2 in favor of Wildie. These two teams are the strongest in the county. Both had lots of practice this season. Let us suggest that Wildie, Hiatt and Buckeye managers pick three men from each team and play the Mt Vernon here about Saturday the 19th and call it the Rockcastle game. ? The dedication service at the Christian Church Sunday conducted by the Rev. F. M. Gaines, of Cincinnati, was a notable event and the result was that $2750 was pledged to the church. Rev. W. J. Loos, of Owenton, formerly pastor of this church was present and participated in the service. G. D. White the pastor, and Revs. V. T. Willis, J. D. Redd and W. L. Brock were present. Prof. Copeland was the organist and the music was fine. The ushers were: Messrs. R. M. Jackson, R. L. Slade, T. G. Moren and W. J. Pearl. This report would not be complete without mentioning that lunch was served in the basement. A fellowship meeting was held in the afternoon at 3:30 and at night Rev. Gaines preached a fine sermon. His subject being ?Christian Growth? London Democrat. ? Death: Dr. Percy Benton, aged 45 years, died at his home in our town last Friday afternoon. Dr. Benton was born and reared in Mt Sterling, graduated from the University of Louisville Medical college, followed by a post graduate course at the Medical College of Philadelphia. He located at Brodhead in this county to practice his profession. Dr. Benton was a natural physician and as we have often heard other physicians say, he could easily diagnose the disease of his patients. He was buried in the Macpelah cemetery in Mt Sterling Sunday afternoon. ? The new Masonic hall will be ready in about two weeks. ? The citizens have contributed most liberally toward helping the band boys get started. The order for the instruments has been made and by this time next week the music, the kind that a band always makes will commence. ? For Sale: Two small farms, mostly in grass. Will sell separate or as a whole. Plenty of fruit. ?Mode? Crawford. LIVINGSTON NEWS The little son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Bullock is very low. ? Dr. R. G. Webb left Saturday for Burning Springs in Clay County to visit his parents. He will be gone about one week. -- H. L. Delph sold his house and lot to C. M. Griffin and will continue to do business at the same place. Delph rented the property from Griffin and will continue to do business at the same place. ? The Democratic Chairman has called a special meeting in all the precincts of the county to elect precinct committeemen, Saturday. Let?s all turn out. ? Alvin Argenbright has just returned from Ettawah, Tenn. About six months ago his best girl went to Ettawah and about a week ago, Alvin went down and the two were made one. So there is one less widower. ? Mrs. J. E. Woodall, a teacher in the Baptist Sunday School, took her class Saturday to the famous natural tunnel, where refreshments were served and a nice time was reported. ? The drugstore was moved Monday into the Pennington property. ? Mr. and Mrs. U. R. Foley have taken rooms with A. Pennington. ? Mr. A. Pennington is mentioned as district chairman, a good man for that place. ? Miss Lula Mericks and Miss Mayme Benson, of Mt Vernon are visiting homefolks this week. ? Carpenters have the new tank just about done. -- Mr. and Mrs. Joe Omary are in Louisville on a week?s visit. ? Thomas Jones left last night for Louisville. This is Tom?s second trip and yet his eyes are very bad. ? Jim Neal, who works with the L & N bridge gang, is at home for a few days. ? Frank Orndorff and James Burton are at home this week from Ford. ? Farmers are getting bad in the weeds because of so much rain. ? The Christian Endeavor will give an ice-cream supper Thursday night. ? Bob Pike has returned from Corbin where he has been for a few days. ? Joshua Boreing sold his possessions on Gauley Branch for $550. Boreing will move to Brush Creek and Delph will take possession at once, -- S. E. Pennington will be at home one day this week. ? F. L. Thompson was in town Tuesday. QUAIL NEWS Haven?t seen any Quail items in the Signal for sometime, thought I would crawl out of the briar patch and come forth again. ? Services were held at Providence Sunday conducted by Rev. Hubbard, of Stanford. ? Dr. D. E. Proctor and family, of Louisville, are the guests of relatives in this section. ? Walker Scott says wedding bells are soon to ring. ? Look out Walker. ? Elder Foley will preach at Bethel Saturday night and Sunday. ? Grant Thompson is numbered among the sick. ? Quail boy will soon reorganize a baseball team. ? Mrs. Jacob Elder was the guest of relatives this past week. ? P. Q. Griffin and wife are visiting in Mt Vernon. ? J. D. Smith and wife were visiting his parents at Crab Orchard the past week. ? Ernie and Opie Herrin and Melvin Owens (the writer) are doing some plastering for the Cox Brothers in Mt Vernon. ? The trial of John Woodson, colored, charged with breaking into the house of John Elder and taking some articles, which was postponed until today on account of the absence of witnesses. The trial will be in the Magistrates court. ? Elder and Owens, the singers of ?Zion,? will probably teach a class at Livingston in the near future. ? Old Aunt Louiza still remains very feeble. ?
